CAN YOU FIND A RENTAL TRUCK IN AMERICA?
Various Online Rental Companies | 10/11/01 | Fighting Irish

Virginia-

I've been online (on and off) for the past several hours trying to locate a truck to move to Florida in and have come to the conclusion.....there are none!

That statement is not entirely true. I found a rate around $400 a week ago (company name withheld). What shocked me was when I went online to book the truck today the rates had climbed nearly $300! IN A WEEK!

The real pill in this story is that on several sites I saw new, special "Penny A Day" rates for police and firefighters.

I'm thankful for what they have done since 9/11 and I have assisted through my wallet when the collection plate is passed on their behalf but, why am I forced to pay additionally for their rentals? In effect that is what's happening.

Am I out to lunch here or has anyone else have the same take?

Yes.

I just rented a 17" UHaul Truck (Triton V-10) with a car carrier to drive from Colorado Springs to Atlanta.

Heck, the local police and EMTs got two free tickets to the local baseball games last week.

Had to call up an ex and talk her into going so I could go for free. (;

You have a problem with capitism?

Think about it, a lot of liberal cowards are making a bee-line away from the DC area (for obvious reasons.)

I would suggest that you search for a truck to rent in rural VA greater than 100 miles away and just eat the extra gas costs for driving the truck bact to NoVA.

BTW, expect to be stopped frequently while driving a rental truck, especially anywhere near DC.

I'm not one to diminish the work that these guys have done.....as a matter of fact it has been heroic. However, I know of quite a few cops that would have pushed folks down in order to save their own hind ends.

And I realize the rental companies want to do their part also.

My gripe is why don't they take the financial hit instead of raising rates for the rest of us non-uniformed types?

Perhaps a lousy argument....and I could just be tired but, I've budgeted a certain amount for this move and it just got shot all to heck.

a 17" UHaul Truck (Triton V-10)

Seventeen inches? The Triton is way too much power for a 17" truck.

For whatever reason, truck rental via the web doesn't work out very well. In the end the local franchise is very independent. Locate a convenient one and have a heart to heart with the owner.

Web based rentals are also unreliable. In two separate instances (once me, once my friend) on the morning of moving day they said they just didn't have the truck they promised. Period. But when I called the local dealer he said he had the truck I wanted right away.

This was all a year ago.

"And I realize the rental companies want to do their part also."

If your local businesses are like mine, they're ALL jumping on the patriotic bandwagon.

Kinda sickening, in a way.

Perhaps the Shootist hit the *shift* key on accident. The valve cover gaskets on the Triton are longer that 17".

But then again......a 17" truck saddled with a 300+HP motor

oooooooooo yeahhhhhhhhhh!

Dittos on the KINDA SICK.

Like I mentioned earlier, I've met some cops that would have made sure they got out of danger even if it meant they knocked down old ladies to get out.

To think those pukes are getting the red carpet everytime they walk out in public in uniform.

God bless 'em!

I know, but I am sometimes a grader in the engineering dept and sometimes my diligence in finding mislabeled units on homework papers spills over into real life. It might be important, like for example if you are NASA sending a robot spacecraft to land on Mars. Actually, i miss the shift key a lot myself.

Good luck. I drove one of those cross-country a month ago and it blew a spark plug right out of the engine. The UHaul maint. guy said it was the 3rd one he'd seen that moth. Known problem, they're still on the road though.

No, that's not what is happening. All the Ryder trucks in the country were rented this week by terrorists to deliver the Unimaginable Weapons that Linda Vester and Carl Cameron have found out about. The resulting shortage has caused a run on U-haul and Penske and other truck rental companies, causing them to hike their prices. The Congress has decided to cut off all truck traffic within 40 blocks of the Capitol, so their butts won't be fried by these unimaginable weapons. But you can still rent the white Ryder trucks, as terrorists never rent them.

No. In fact I did the same run, in reverse, almost exactly a year ago for almost $700 less.

The truck rental companies depend on the one way rentals to be equal in both directions. If there is an imbalance, they will charge more for the busy direction and less for the quiet direction. Otherwise they've got to pay to move empty trucks around.

Update on the 17 inch truck rental.

I went to pick it up and UHaul had never heard of me and didn't have a 17' truck. Confirmation number and $100 deposit and they had no record.
