VANITY: What Music Are You Listening To Now?

OK, I'm a 30-year-old American boy, I'm a music-o-phile that plays in a band. We play both kinds of music - punk rock and country. And I'm wondering what other music Freepers have been soothed by since Sept. 11. I found myself quickly reverting to A LOT of Sinatra, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Big Band, WWII era stuff. Just popped in the soundtrack to the movie "Radio Days," and it hits the spot. You may not be a Woody Allen fan, he's kind of a perv and all, but nevertheless, I just felt I had to log on and get some idea after the song "Let's Remember Pearl Harbor" came on. Thoughts?

Rob Zombie, Ozzie, and Disturbed. Pretty much anything expressing rage and alienation. ; )
Rage over the attack, and alienation from a society coddles politically correct traitors.

I always listened to Big Band/Swing - I've found that a lot of people our age do, but I'm not sure why. Right now I've found myself wanting "Epic" music - Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, New World Symphony by Dvorak, Grand Canyon Suite by Grofe. I think it has to do with the "heroic" nature of the music; but it also has a great deal to do with the fact that my Father was the first to introduce me to classical music and I miss him dreadfully right now.

The other music I immediately HAD to hear was an old beat up 33LP vinyl titled "Songs of the North and South" by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir - it features the most absolutely stirring song of all, the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I listened to it the day of the attacks, I had to hear it. If ever there was a time for such a song, it is now...

Ah yes, 20 Golden Country Hits. Piss up a rope. I'm too busy trying not to have a panic attack in the newsroom, so I have been avoiding the hard stuff, save for some Motorhead and The Gits on the weeekend..

My musical desires haven't changed a whit since Sept. 11, for whatever reason. If anything, I've been listening to music less. But then, I'm a news junkie. Before 9/11 I was probably playing music a lot more in order to get away from the media's fixations on meaningless stupidites like shark attacks.

I've been trying to find that version of 'Blood on the Risers' The Airborne version of the Battle Hymn? maybe I haven't searched hard enough. Something to the effect of,

"Gory, gory what a helluva way to die
With a rifle strapped onto his back and staring at the sky
Gory, gory what a helluva way to die
Now he ain't gonna jump no more"

Everyone gets freaked out when I start singing that one strolling down the hallway, heh heh.

Ah yes, and it's time to break out Spinal Tap and listen to "Hell Hole" again. You want some alienated thrash metal? Go here and play the "Baby Bonnie Hood vs. Osama" game and listen to the intro it is AWESOME. Talk about some blood lust music - the only problem is I don't know who sings it, I can't get to the credits. Maybe one of you know who it is - whoever, I want it NOW. I've played the game for three days just so I can hear the music...

Let me suggest the long, slow version of "Waltzing Matilda." I believe if is sort of an anti-war piece, but it has another meaning, for me.

It recounts how the Aussies got slaughtered at Galipoli, because of bad military intelligence, planning, etc. Let's pray our military leaders perform their tasks with excellence, to minimize our people's loss of life and limb.

I have not had a CD player very long, and have spent all my money buying older stuff to play catch up. I prefer the "classic rock" like Mellencamp, The Eagles, Queen, Journey, etc. For some reason, I am getting nostalgic about my misspent youth. And I am not even old yet.

Our local symphony just held a free concert, also broadcast throughout the park blocks, a large section of 'green spaces' downtown. People sat on blankets , lit candles, gathered, et. al. They did 'Adagio for Strings' and I cried for about an hour straight.

Killer, thank you. That is it. I also found an old record of Airborne songs and cadences, which I last blasted out of the house on July 4. My wife thought me batty.

I've been listening all week to a budget CD set called "Swing Out to Victory." It's full of upbeat World War II songs, some of them fairly obscure. A few favorites:

"We Did It Before (and We Can Do It Again)" - Carl Hoff and His Orchestra (especially pertinent to right now)

"A Slip of a Lip (Can Sink a Ship)" - Duke Ellington and His Orchestra.

"First Class Private Mary Brown" - Perry Como

"There'll Be a Jubilee" - Mildred Bailey with Benny Goodman.
