A very good read.

"...Twenty-four lab technicians came down with the unknown disease, along with six of the nurses caring for them. Of the 31 people infected, seven died. This kind of undiagnosed outbreak would be alarming enough, but it was the horror of their deaths that caught the attention of biologists and tropical disease specialists around the world.

The mysterious virus appeared to liquefy body organs. One of the survivors went mad after the organism chewed away his brain cells. Before the victims died, every inch of their bodies was wet with blood..."

Do you suppose we will see mushroom clouds in the distance? To the east, I mean.

The only nice thing about biological warfare is that the most effective biological weapon that some foreign rogue state could conceivably produce would not discriminate between belligerents. It would have been poetic justice if the Soviet Union had a biowarfare "Chernobyl".

Why is this scientist calling viruses "organisms"?

Actually, most scientists refer to viruses as organisms:

they most definitely replicate,
their evolution can (within limits) be traced quite effectively, and
they are independent in terms of not being limited to a single organism as host

What happened there? This report above sounds like a story on Frontline a number of years ago (probably first aired around the time of the Gulf war)

One of the scariest books I've ever read was "The Hot Zone", by Richard Preston, about the Ebola virus. The opening chapter described the progression of Ebola in an index patient for one of its periodic outbreaks. It read a lot like the experiences of the unfortunate Comrade Ustinov.

An interesting read. I can't say more about it than that since I am unfamiliar with whether or not this is true or accurate.

"The government I served perceived no contradiction between the oath every doctor takes to preserve life and our preparations for mass murder. For a long time, neither did I. "

You don't have to be a Russian to endorse and participate in mass murder. Our doctors here happily perform abortions at any time for any reason. At least this doctor sees a problem with these bio weapons.

THE HOT ZONE by Preston is a great book, but not for the faint of heart. The frightening thing about it is that it's a true story.

I also recommend Ken Alibek's BIO-HAZARD, which the excerpt above is taken from. What's unsettling about the Soviet Union's biological weapons program is that much of their workproduct remains unaccounted for after the soviet collapse. Some of which was undoubtedly sold to the highest bidder.

ON A BLEAK island in the Aral Sea, 100 monkeys are tethered to posts set in parallel rows stretching out toward the horizon.

A very bleak island as you can see for yourselves.

I've read this book. Harrowing stuff. The Russians had invented stuff that made anthrax seem like a head cold.

Actually, the Soviets DID have a biowar version of Chernobyl, and it featured our old friend anthrax. They accidentally released a mess of the stuff into the air in the city of Sverdlovsk. Hundreds died. They told the West that it was an outbreak caused by infected meat. Liberals believed them; conservatives said it was bunk. Of course, the conservatives were right. The Russians have since admitted they were making anthrax at Sverdlovsk.

The story is recounted in Ken Alibek's Biohazard. He even talks of having a shame-faced man come in for a job interview at his germ warfare facility. Turns out he was the guy who'd caused the Sverdlovsk disaster. It was his job to replace the filters that removed bacteria from the air before pumping it out of the building. Well, he removed the old filters all right, but forgot to install the fresh ones. And so for a period of hours, anthrax-tainted air flooded the city. Utterly appalling story. By all means read the book.

The Soviet bioweapons facility in Sverdlosk released airborne anthrax spores. A drunken soviet technician installed the air filters backwards. Over a hundred people died. The Soviets initially claimed it was from eating contaminated black market meat.
