An anthrax scare gripped the nation yesterday as a third employee of a supermarket tabloid was said to be exposed - and the FBI probed frightening reports of an odd e-mail from a departing intern about "a little present" that he left behind.

A top executive at the company said the intern was believed to be from Sudan and was on an exchange program at a local college.

This underscores the criminal stupidity of our Immigration policies and administration.

When I first started traveling in Europe in the early 70s, submitting my passport everywhere to be kept track of was simply a fact of life, and non-threatening, so long as I knew I was up to no mischief.
That was over 30 years ago!
How many mischief makers are among us now and continuing to enter as "students" and "tourists"?
And we keep debating inanities like "killing innocent civilians" and "profiling"!

Is there a name for collective national stupidity?

Silly me. "Progressive"? "Liberalism"?

ugh....who was it here that said they were more worried about panic? The biggest threat to us right now, is the subversive tactics used by officials to avoid panic. Panic is a great motivator...we can be motivated to root out these "evil-doers" (I hate that phrase now)..by our own sense of self preservation. Instead, they lie to us and tell us to hug the closest Muslim. We do so at our own peril.

Most Americans are not the type to run around in circles muttering the sky is falling.

I can't figure out what is the best way to manage this type of news. I am finding that through sites like this I am able to filter out accurate, early reports that give me the info I need to deal with this crisis. When I am away and on the road I listen to whatever "talk radio" I can pick up and I am constantly amazed at the level of intelligence of the host, the callers are usually idiots. Judging from the TV shows that are popular, its an accurate reflection of the US population in general. I don't think they can handle the Truth simply because they won't HEAR the truth or understand it. Panic of the "masses" would be much more of a problem then the actual incidents. The ones that can understand and act accordingly are able to find out what they need to know.

Q: How would one go about exposing large numbers of people to anthrax spores?

A: Mass mailing

Warning: Don't open mail from unknown sources. Teat all postal workers for exposure, especially those in Florida!

This is a seperate case that we're just learning about. It's unrelated to the Virginia case and it HAS NOT been discounted.

The most recent word on the Virginia case is that "it does not appear" to be anthrax, but they're still waiting for the lab results, which take 24 hours.

I agree. They must think we're all morons. Or that they had a cattle drive through the office. The percentages are so remote for this being created through natural causes in the same office, in the same time span. But it's just a coincidence people, so move along, spend money, take a vacation, and don't worry, be happy.

B.S. Alert. And this is the one thing I was worried more about than our civil liberties. They know we "the people" would demand massive retribution once the nation guilty of this was discovered. I'd suggest they not piss us off and tell us up front the entire truth.

"...They were also asked for all their computer passwords so investigators could probe their hard drives..."

That's BS! What the hell for??

It's possible the anthrax was planted by someone they were doing a story on. They need to find out who was working on what stories, and what information they had. The star of david shape found on the envelope would seem to indicate a middle-eastern connection, but it could also be a ruse to throw investigators off the trail.

This is freakin amazing. I hardly ever get junk mail at my office. I look in my inbox this morning and there are two plain white business envelopes that are identical. They each have my name and address typed on a label. There is absolutely no return address anywhere on the envelope - nothing to indicate who it is from. They are both postmarked Kissimmee Florida and both first class. Now I am faced with a dilemma. Do I open them? My first instinct was absolutely not and I threw them in the trash, but now I'm worried that they might be something important from a client. Anyone that mails something without a return address is an idiot.

"It's possible the anthrax was planted by someone they were doing a story on."

It's possible that anthrax was spread by such a simple means as one of the hijackers walking through the building with an open vile. He was gonna' die, anyway, right?

Oh my goodness, have you completely accepted the Liberal/Socialist viewpoint? If everybody is "so stupid", then how does the free market, liberty and other such enlightened concepts work so well?

To think that the entire public except for a tiny elite consists of morons and droolers is to fall into the first half of the Liberal/Socialist method of thinking. All that's left after that is to come to the "realization" that since they are all too stupid to know what is right for them, then it is up to you to direct them in their daily lives.

While I would agree that there are many people who barely have enough sense to know how to draw consecutive breaths, there are many more who are far more intelligent than you or I.

Statistically, half of the population is below average intelligence and half are above average intelligence (minus the 1% who are exactly average). How an individual chooses to express their intelligence is the beauty of liberty. They do not have to talk like Frasier Crane, nor do they have to crank out a Doctorate Thesis every couple of years. They can speak with the gravest of accents and have no formal education, yet invent the modern day equivilent of the Light Bulb in their basement in their spare time. Or they could express their intelligence through their mastery of their job or of other avenues of interest to them personally, which you would never see or detect by listening to talk shows or watching what was current on the "idiot box".

Simply put, freedom does not work if everybody is a moron. I would hope that those here would see this, and believe that most do, else we wouldn't be the freedom loving folks that most of us are.

(rant off)

Tough call, but if it were me, I would put the envelope in a sealed zip lock bag, then try carefully to rip it open without tearing the plastic. If anything suspicious, would contact FBI. I would not throw away w/o investigating as it could be a potential lead.

You're correct. If knowledge that our Federal government knew of this anthrax attack and tried to cover it up and then thousands or millions were killed they would have NO place to hide from the angry citizens. They would be well advised to not piss off the American people who they SERVE!
