Rush Limbaugh goes deaf
Talk radio giant makes dramatic announcement to audience

Rush Limbaugh, the most listened-to radio talk-show host in history, announced to stunned fans worldwide yesterday that he is getting increasingly deaf – unable to hear callers, radio, television or music.

"I have lost my ability to hear," he said. "I have not lost my ability to communicate."

Limbaugh's announcement sent shockwaves through the broadcasting industry – and the nation.

President Bush expressed personal concern about Limbaugh's condition with senior staff.

"The president noted Rush Limbaugh is a national treasure," one senior White House staffer told the Drudge Report.

For the past three months, Limbaugh has been steadily losing his hearing.

"I am, for all practical purposes, deaf," Limbaugh said.

Limbaugh's show is heard on over 600 stations; he commands an audience of more than 22 million a week.

"I've been doing a lot of soul-searching this past summer because of some things that have happened to me, that have caused me to redefine what's meaningful and what is happy and important and what's not," he told listeners. "Simply put, I noticed on the 29th of May – I'll never forget the date – that I could not hear anything in my left ear."

Limbaugh sought medical attention and learned there is a history of genetic hearing loss in his family. However, Limbaugh said that is not the cause of his hearing loss.

"There's something more going on than that," he said. "I have been through every conceivable medical test and exam this summer you can imagine. All those times that you thought I was on vacation or playing golf, I've been in an MRI machine or getting blood drawn, or on a stress EKG machine or at a cardiologist, wherever, hearing aid doctor, the hearing doctor, where have you."

The situation just continues to deteriorate.

"The bottom line is, from May 29th up until about, I'd say, 10 days ago, I lost hearing every five days, to the point, ladies and gentlemen, I'm now totally deaf in my left ear," he said. "I cannot hear a thing in my left ear, with hearing aids, the most powerful made, mean nothing. I have the ability to recognize sound but not identify it in my right ear."

Limbaugh said he "cannot communicate with people."

"I can occasionally talk to people in person one on one if their voice frequency happens to fit the range that I can still hear, but I cannot hear radio, I cannot hear television, I cannot hear music," he said. "I am, for all practical purposes, deaf, and it's happened in three months. I have been to what I learned were the finest doctors and clinics throughout the country, focusing on one, and every effort has been made to stabilize the loss, with the hope of restoring it. No success has been reported, in either stabilizing it or losing it – or restoring it. Now, all during this summer, the loss, even though rapid, by the middle of July, for example, I was told that from the end of May to the middle of July I had lost what the average person loses in 15 years, in terms of hearing. Hearing aids are of such improved quality today that they accommodated the loss. My hearing wasn't normal, but I could function."

Limbaugh explained that he took two phone calls during yesterday's program and could not hear a word any of the callers said.

"I'm not going to explain to you how we're doing this," he added. "Put two and two together, if you wish, but as long as the passion exists to do it, then we'll find a way, because – I'm at that point now; this is where I am. What do I do about it? Now, I've been luckier than most people will ever be in life. I can retire if I wanted to and not suffer. I don't have a worry in the world when it comes to finances. That's how fortunate I've been."

Limbaugh asked his audience to understand his increasing absences from the show.

"The only thing that is really going to change is that I may have to be absent a day here and a day there, more so than I would like, just in order to see the doctors," he said.

He added that one other option, besides the medications he is taking, is the cochlear implant.

"It's the last thing they do because it's irreversible. Once you do that you're finished, and if it doesn't work, then nothing they can do to go back and put you back the way you were," he said. "So you must wait until you are entirely deaf for approval for this. I mean the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) even gets involved in this because it's surgery which involves the brain. I have not yet spoken to people who have received cochlear implants, but I've talked to a number of doctors who say that it would be an improvement over the situation I'm in now."

Yet, Limbaugh is not giving up – not on the thing he loves most, talk radio.

"That doesn't mean that I cannot continue to do what I love doing here," he said. "It's just a matter of finding out how and the best way to do it."

I was profoundly deaf as a child, so I'm speaking from experience - DON'T GIVE IN TO THE SILENCE!! It a rough shuffle, but with the new technologies phone commnunication is not the bugaboo it once was. Face-to-face communication is more dicey, but it can still be done with new voice-to-text translation technology; I personally preferred lip reading, but that's not possible for everyone...

He sounded back to his usual self today. So good and animated. He is a man of amazing strength and fortitude, in addition to his many God-given talents. I'm certainly praying for him. Wonder what changed between last week and today that he sounded back to normal. Whatever he did, he has his exact voice back again. It must be hard to gauze the voice without being able to hear it.

Everything we have and are is "on loan from God." He has His reasons for everything.

I hope you will trust, Rush, that God in His wisdom will work this, too, together for your good, because you love Him and are called, according to His purposes. May He give you grace in this trial. May it be a catalyst into an even greater ministry. Amen.

Going public with the problem will only do good. Medical and techies all over the world will focus on the problem and either help with a cure or develop solutions to overcome the problem.

As Limbaugh singlehandedly saved AM radio, he may also be the spark for greater hearing research or mechanical aids.

The guy is a success magnet!

We love Rush. And as a poster who's hard of hearing I can relate how difficult it is to succeed in a world where most people take their hearing for granted. And our hope goes out to Rush that he's not going to go away that even if it turns out he's completely deaf and doctors can't save his hearing that he will nevertheless continue to be involved. People haven't always agreed with what he's said on his show but they've liked his love of this country, his faith in the American people, and the unique blend of humor and entertainment with which he endeared himself to millions that's counted a lot more than his political views. Yeah being Mr. Conservative is part of what Rush did and does but people who think that a lot of people tune into his radio program just to hear him talk about politics miss why people do listen to him.

Our hearts go out to Rush and his wife Marta and their friends and families and all the dittohead listeners and pray for his complete recovery. And every American hopes he will be around to inspire us for many many more years to come.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!!!

This situation is incredibly tragic. But I know that Rush will find a way to overcome this loss. Somehow.

Now we can watch the people start to become more and more liberal. There are just not that many conservative voices left.

Sad story. I've listened to Rush since the early 90's, when he was only on in Springfield, MA in our area and still listen to him every day. One way or another, he'll find his way through this ordeal. Whether he gets his hearing back or not.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rush, Marta, and family.

I don't know TL, we've got a good crop behind Rush: Sean Hannity who just went syndicated, Neal Boortz, and, of course, Michael Savage, whom I wish was syndicated. Losing Rush would be a big loss, but with these guys and Fox News, where Hannity also has a show, we're in far better shape than a few years back.

I'm a cochlear implant surgeon at the University of South Florida (otology/neurotology). There is definitely -- that is, DEFINITELY -- hope for Rush.

It is likely that he suffers from an autoimmune hearing loss, in which the body's immune system attacks the inner ear (similar to rheumatoid arthritis, where the body's immune system attacks the cartilage in a joint). Noise is also an unlikely cause of his hearing loss, because noise-induced hearing loss occurs gradually over decades, not months. Of course, if a hand grenade goes off in your immediate surroundings the onset of the loss might be a little more sudden.... Because it doesn't sound like his hearing loss is responding to therapy (mind you, I'm going by his statement and have no access to his medical records), it could also be a genetic hearing loss.

His hope is a cochlear implant. Perhaps because he is in the early stages of dealing with his new condition, his spirit is flagging. Cochlear implant surgery is extremely successful but we generally hold off until we are quite convinced that we can't preserve whatever residual hearing a patient still has. People with cochlear implants are quite capable of holding a conversation over the phone & understanding over 90% of a word list without lipreading, so there's still hope for "Open Line Friday"!

Evolution in action: what organs one doesn't use become merely vestigial.

Or, Assuming my best Reverend Falwell impersonation ... Perhaps its a judgement from God. Yes, the sins of Rush have come home to roost. For his wanton ways, his disrespectful and prideful nature, Rush has been measured, Rush has been judged, and he was found lacking, and duly punished.

What is the primary therapy for autoimmune hearing loss. Corticosteroids and methotrexate?

First, for sudden hearing loss, most otologists start out with a Medrol dose pack (corticosteroids). This can sometimes stop most "idiopathic" sudden sensorineural hearing losses. If this stabilizes the loss, and then the loss continues when the steroids are weaned off, or if the other ear starts to go, then you probably have an autoimmune hearing loss and you have to put the patient on Prednisone for a couple of months. If this stabilizes the patient, and then you go to wean him off the Prednisone (because of the risks of prolonged steroid therapy), and his hearing again deteriorates ("steroid-dependent autoimmune hearing loss") then you transition to methotrexate or cytoxan.

Disclaimer: the preceding should not be interpreted as medical advice and any sudden hearing losses should be referred to an otologist/neurotologist for proper work-up and treatment.
