United Way Shake-Down Response
Vanity | Me

Posted on 10/08/2001 11:52:28 AM PDT by BreitbartSentMe

We just had our annual United Way meeting/indoctrination at where I work, and I had to sit through their song & dance about the importance of giving, what great stuff they do, etc...... I don't have a problem with giving, but I do have some problems with giving through the United Way; some of the gay/lesbian/enviroNazi/touchy-feely organizations that your gift ends up benefiting, not to mention the 16.7% overhead figure they quoted today (which they say is low) etc. etc. I like to donate directly to the organizations I want to. However, they had 2 interesting points that might lead me to dontate through them this year.

1. This year you can donate to the Sept 11th Fund, on a one-time basis only, and they will send the entire amount to the fund (no overhead)
2. You can designate ANY 501(c) organization to receive your entire gift through the United Way/CHAD payroll deduction. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

I'm thinking of signing up for a monthly contribution to the NRA Civil Rights Fund to help protect 2nd Ammendment rights in the US. I think it will really IRK them to have to send them my donation each month. What do you think????

Also, does FreeRepublic have any sort of a 501(c) status?

There are working out the details of that in the next couple of weeks.

You've bought into a basic UW argument that is FALSE! This is not the United Way Campaign! This is your company's employee giving campaign. In the old days, the UW did something that you could not do for yourself. It took a payroll deduction and split it up for your employer. This was at a time when payroll deductions were costly. Today, however, you payroll computing capabilities are much more advanced. It almost makes no difference for you to have 1000 designated beneficiaries for payroll deductions.

Run your own employee giving campaign with the UW as one of the designated beneficiaries on your pre-printed form, along with the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and any other local 501(c)(3) of importance, plus a blank space for write-ins. The local Boy Scouts council is probably a good one. TAKE BACK YOUR EMPLOYEE GIVING PROGRAM FROM THE POLITICALLY CORRECT UW; give it back to your employees.

Well, that would be fine, except one of the problems I have with United Way is that they give a high percentage to Boy Scouts than Girl Scouts.

Give it to the Right to Life foundation. That'll put their panties in a bind.

You can designate ANY 501(c) organization to receive your entire gift through the United Way/CHAD payroll deduction.

If you designate a 501(c) organization, your employer normally sends your entire donation directly to the 501(c) charity.

If no designation is made the United Fund keeps on average 20% of your donation (salaries, advertising, etc.) for themselves and passes on the remainder to various charities of their choosing.

Well, I don't know about your figures, however the representatives from United Way themselves said their overhead percentage was 16.7%

After the way United Way betrayed the Boy Scouts, I will never support them again.

Last year my husband stated on his form at work that he wanted all his donation to be given to the Boy Scouts. Well.... several months later we got a thank you from a different organization for our generous donation! When my husband called the UW director in our town about it, he apologized and said there was nothing he could do about it. This year we ARE NOT giving our money to the UW. We have already written checks to the Red Cross September 11 fund and the Boy Scouts. His employer has not asked him about his not participating and I don't believe they will. The United Way won't get to make that decision for us again.

Give your money to whom you want. However, the history of the United Way as it relates to support of deviants at the expense of the Boy Scouts when coupled to the fact it comes down to the boss looking good at a local luncheon is sufficient reason for me to send mine directly to the local Boy Scouts and Salvation Army.

(1) you can donate directly to the victims of Sept. 11 if you like, no need to go through the United Way other than that your employer forces you to.

(2) You can donate to any 501(c) organization you want too without the United Way taking 14% off the top. You should also be aware that if the ornagization is one that they have budgeted $100,000 for, and you give a $1000 earmarked for that organization, it still gets $100,000, and the United Way has $1000 more from its un earmarked funds to give to other organizations. Your target organization may not be helped. Just write a check to them.

They garuantee (sic) 90% of all funds received go to a specific charity. 10% to costs...

Not quite true!

Money sent DIRECTLY by an employer to a designated charity still counts towards the United Way's total funds raised.

Also much of the fund raising and advertising is paid for by the various corporations involved in the fund raising which does not count towards the United Way expenses.

I hear on this site that they waste millions of dollars on their own enterprise et al. Well, the truth is they are one of the most efficient of all charities. They garuantee 90% of all funds received go to a specific charity. 10% to costs...
Not true, the costs for even the most efficient United Ways run well over 10%, and they avoid telling you who the worse ones do:
Because of the vast network of volunteers and the simplicity of corporate payroll deduction, administrative expenses for the largest United Ways average 13 percent of all funds raised. This low figure compares favorably with the suggested Better Business Bureau guidelines of up to 35 percent.
Any donation destination can be defined by the giver, and the United Way is under obligation to deliver those funds to that party.
And the destination often gets no more money for it, depending on the destination, not to mention which they often make “mistakes” and send it to the wrong place.
