WTC Widow Faces Expulsion From U.S.?

LONDON (Reuters) - A British woman faces expulsion from the United States after losing her husband in the September 11 attacks on New York because her right to live in the country died with her husband, she said on Sunday.

Deena Gilbey, 37, relied on her husband Paul for her right to live in the United States because she was listed as a ''dependent'' on his work visa. Officials wrote to her days after the attack to say her right to live in America was being withdrawn.

``My husband was murdered in this country, his remains are still there somewhere at Ground Zero, and now the U.S. government is killing us all over again,'' Gilbey told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

Gilbey said she had called the Immigration and Naturalization Service to check on her status after receiving the letter. She says they told her that she was an illegal alien.

Gilbey also told the paper that she had learned from a probate lawyer that she is liable for sixty percent tax on her husband's life insurance because she is neither a citizen nor a Green Card immigrant.

Gilbey, from Southend in Essex in eastern England said it threatened the loss of her New Jersey home which she shares with her sons Mason, 3, and Maxwell, 7.

``The little boys are traumatized and now they want to take our home from us. We did things properly, so if something happened to Paul I could bring up the kids in our own home, and now it is going to be impossible to do that,'' she said.

. Why not just claim that her husband is still alive, and let the INS try to prove that he died?

What does she do for income? She'd have a hard time finding a job.

Maybe I'm missing something. What does her source of income have to do with this? If she doesn't want to go back, then I just laid out a scenario that would allow her to stay. Whether she has enough money to stay here is a different issue entirely -- That would also be an issue if she went back to Britain.

You nailed this one.

Every UKer who had to pay big $'s to come and then become a citizen, whom I have known the past 5 years in this category were good workers. They all worked at good jobs, paid taxes and were zero drag on society. You can't have people becoming citizens with a sense of personal responsibility. From 1992 to Jan 2001, INS only wanted instant welfare DNC voting sheeple as citizens!

How right you are. We have several academics at my work from UK who've tried for years to get citizenship under Clinton/Gore, and CAN'T! However, they've watched their Mexican gardeners and maids get their citizenship in weeks...

And when one of them told me his troubles were due to conservatives and Republicans, I laughed loudly in his face.

How is she going to support herself is all I was asking. If she is a "dependent" on his work visa, I'm assuming she isn't working. No visa, no work here regardless of skills.

Who are these "officals"? Writing to this woman days after the attack???

Probably the same people who rolled over when the Clinton administration expedited the naturlization process to give themselves a whole wad of new democRATic voters.

Heard this on the news last night, if anybody has Guliani's ears, please whisper this little story to him. He is a very decent human being and will probably do something to make this situation go away.

He can either get the governor of New York involved, or he has the ear of the president right now, and the President can make all kinds of fun executive orders, such as making this woman a citizen by presidential declaration.

It was not her fault that her husband was killed by terrorist cowards, And therefore she should not be punished either. She should be given citizenship ASAP!!!

That has happened to my UK friends here in N. California!

"And when one of them told me his troubles were due to conservatives and Republicans, I laughed loudly in his face."

All but one these UK friends are conservatives. The other was a moderate until 9/11. She had some relatives who missed some associated disasters by pure luck. Her mother told her that these mass murdering Arabs were even worse than the Germans bombing London (This lady was a young woman during the bombing and had no real memories). Her MUM spent a few hours explaining the reality of those days in London. Her MUM then took it one step further and asked her how she would feel if one of her children or granddaughters had been a victim of the mass murder! She is no longer a moderate. She never was a free loader. He MUM is one of those amazing 86+ women who knows history and quickly identifies those would destroy us! MUM got so upset with the 9/11 mass murder and trying to educate her daughter, she had to go to the hospital for an incidence of too much stress for a couple of days!

My company tried to hire a British national to do engineering design work. The overwhelming difficulties raised by the INS over employing this young lady eventually forced her back to England for good. On the other hand, if we hired an illegal Chinese or Mexican and tried to get them a green card, I'm sure they wouldn't bat an eye.
