Homeowner shoots intruder

SUMMERVILLE - A homeowner shot and wounded a man who authorities said forced his way into a Newington Road home Saturday and assaulted an elderly couple.

The man was shot in chest about 7 p.m., Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash said.

The intruder, who was not identified, was listed in critical condition at Trident Regional Medical Center, Nash said.

Nash did not identify the homeowner but described the man and his wife as "an elderly couple."

No criminal charges are expected to be filed against the homeowner because he was acting in self-defense when he shot the intruder, Nash said.

"It looks like the homeowner was within his rights," Nash said.

The sheriff said detectives have not completed their investigation, but he provided the following account of the events leading up to the shooting:

A husband and wife were in their home when they heard someone trying to come in through their back door. They then spotted a stranger making his way from the backyard to the front.

When the homeowners opened the front door, a stranger forced his way into the house, briefly pushing and grabbing the couple.

As the intruder bolted to the back of the house, the male homeowner ran into a back bedroom and grabbed his handgun.

With gun in hand, the homeowner confronted the intruder.

Nash said the intruder was shot at least once when he tried to assault the homeowner. He said detectives have not determined how many times the intruder was shot and how many shots were fired.

Nash said deputies found the wounded man lying in a bathroom.

The homeowners, Nash said, were emotionally shaken by the incident, but they were not seriously harmed physically. "Both of them are concerned about welfare of the suspect. They said they hope he lives," Nash said.

Another case of a gun in the home resulting in injury. But according to Sara Brady, it wasn't susposed to happen this way. The gun was susposed to shoot its owner, not the perp!

Lucky it didn't happen in some states that require you to run away from a fight if you can.

The sad part is that if he lives, he'll probably sue the homeowner.

Don't have time to read all this right now. I'll just catch the details on it tomorrow when it runs in the Wasington Post, New York Times, LA Times and the Atlanta Journal-Contstitution.

But it shows the decency of the elderly couple that they are worried about the fate of the burglar. They seem to have real, good old-fashioned moral sense; they are not wet, modern sentimentalists. I hope they are allright and will be left in peace for the rest of their lives.

I wouldn't be suprised that, if the man is identified as a "foreigner", that the media will get a hold of this and turn into some kind of hate crime.

Of course if he had used a non-registered weapon in self-defense they proabably would have thrown the book at him.

Are there any states that require one to retreat even in their own homes? Florida does not require retreat at home or in your business; Colorado has it's "Make My Day" law.

Folks, this is the reason you need to get yourself to the range on a regular basis.

Why do we keep reading "elderly" when someone in their 70s defends themselves. My mom is 77 and packs a 38 special (with a concealed weapons permit), mows 20 acres of rolling land, cares for dogs, deer, and any other wildlife; It would be ridiculous to refer to her as "elderly" if she would defend herself with her revolver.

I live in Florida and just purchased a new home. The ADT security salesman came knocking to sell me some "home protection". I told him it was upstairs.

He looked at me funny, like I had two heads. I told him I had a firearm for protection, and I would shoot first and ask questions later.

He informed me that you can't shoot an intruder unless it's life or death.

I told him "no problem, ever hear of a throw down weapon"

End of story. Don't let the door hit you in the arse.

Dial 911 and die.

Or the other epic in American love with the deadly welfare mentality.

Because when cops will see it is easier to risk attacking regular citizens, they will see it fit to avoid bothering the more dangerous mafia. Those on welfare will die of hunger or shot by cops.

I don't know for sure, but I doubt that South Carolina has any gun registration. ...besides the FBI Instant Check Registration

Same thing happened to me, not ONE MONTH after we'd moved in...

"I'm with ADT. Have you considered home security?"

"Yep, I consider it every time my Wife and I clean our weapons."

THEN, he started raising points that he didn't think I was even AWARE of:

"What if neither one of you are home?"

"We have a huge dog."

"What if the intruders kill your dog?"

"Are you telling me that you people are going to outrun a bullet fired from a burglar's gun into the skull of our dog in time to do any good?"

"Well, no. I was just saying.."

"Look, Let me ask YOU a question: What if someone with ADT who's supposed to be monitoring homes and businesses decides to use your system to gain access to 'protected' homes?"

"Well, we pre-screen all of our employees to prevent..."

"Then explain WHY one of your employees did just that only three years ago."

"Well..."

"Anyone who steps foot in our home without permission is a corpse. Anyone who does it while we're not home is a coward and VERY lucky; items are replacable. THAT's my only required home defense. Have a nice day *slam*"
