BOCA RATON -- The chief executive officer of a Boca Raton company who prohibited employees from flying the American flag at their desks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has resigned.
Bill Schrempf on Friday quit NCCI Holdings Inc., which compiles workers compensation insurance data. A source said Schrempf spent the past several days working out his severance package with the NCCI board of directors that sought his resignation over the flag controversy.
NCCI Chairwoman Judith Blades told employees Friday about Schrempf's resignation and she apologized for Schrempf's flag policy. A search is underway for Schrempf's replacement.
"We will look for a seasoned executive," Blades said in a statement.
Schrempf, 59, told NCCI's 850 employees in a Sept. 14 e-mail that it was inappropriate for them to display flags on their desks because co-workers might be offended.
"Divisive statements or actions, political or religious discussions and anything else that could be divisive or mean different things to different people are not appropriate in our work environment," Schrempf wrote.
On Sept. 14 -- the national day of prayer and remembrance -- several NCCI managers had employees remove their flags. One employee was suspended and told to go home when she refused to comply.
The Boca Raton company received thousands of e-mails and phone calls from angry people throughout the country. Schrempf reversed the policy and handed out flags at work the following Monday. Schrempf explained in a statement that he was complying with a request from Gov. Jeb Bush that groups remove restrictions against displaying the flag.
Schrempf never publicly apologized, but company spokesman Michael Bullard acknowledged the policy was a mistake.
Several employees on Friday said they were happy to see Schrempf leave.
"We endured thousands of hostile e-mails and phone calls questioning our patriotism and even threatening us," said one employee, who requested anonymity. "It's been very hard to work for NCCI. This was not what we signed up for."
NCCI hired Schrempf as its top executive in July 1998. Because the company is not public, it does not disclose executive salaries. Schrempf, who refused several requests for an interview, previously was an international consultant at Ernst & Young in New York.
NCCI is a nonprofit organization that is owned by about 700 insurance and other businesses.
