During the war with the Soviet Union, the mujahdeen were not afraid of the Soviet soldiers. But they were very afraid of their helicopters.
They did fear the helicopters, but they set traps for them as well. The USSR attacked some area and the mujihadeen knew they would probably attack. They shot down 3 copters as they showed up and killed the rest of the Soviet special forces in a cross fire.
Those mountains are not our local hills. It is not going to be easy to fly a chopper there, especially in winter. They are used to the altitude and they know the area very well, that includes the maze of caves. The worst part is, they are not military, they are terrorists. This is not going to be like IRAQ, where we knew, whom we were fighting. It is going to be close to impossible for us to weed the civilians out and just attack the terrorists. What ever we give them, the locals may not be of much help to our forces.
I woudl feel much safer if our back yard is safe. Going after those guys is essential, but can wait. First lets, weed out their supporters here and make sure they do not get back in.
