Yngwie Malmsteen Tells Brazilian Audience “God Bless America And F*** You All” After “Star Spangled Banner” Is Booed

A small riot broke out during guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen’s headlining show in Porto Alegre, Brazil on Tuesday, October 2nd after the guitarist performed his rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” “Midway through the set, Yngwie finished his guitar solo spot with the ‘Star Spangled Banner,’” says touring keyboardist Derek Sherinian (formerly of prog-rock titans Dream Theater). “The crowd of about 1,500 people started immediately booing very loudly, and throwing shit on stage.” The crowd’s behavior forced the band members to storm off the stage, leaving their equipment susceptible to damage as a result of the objects being thrown by the angry audience.

“After Yngwie's solo we had about 5 more songs to play,” continues Sherinian. “All of my spirit was gone. I finished the set disgusted, and without looking at the crowd for the rest of the show. After the final song, the band went to the dressing room. I told Yngwie I refuse to go out for the encore under any circumstances, ‘F.CK THESE PEOPLE.’ Yngwie went back on stage by himself and played the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ again to a choir of loud boos. He then said on the microphone, ‘God Bless America and F*** YOU ALL’ and walked off stage. The crowd went into a riot and started throwing s*** on stage. We immediately were rushed back to our hotel. I have no idea of the status of our gear.”

“I want to thank Yngwie for taking my back, and for standing up for the USA.”

“I am currently the only American in Yngwie Malmsteen's touring band. What happened at last night's gig in Porte Allegre, Brazil was shocking. To see the Anti-American rallies on CNN is bad enough, but to be in the middle of one is scary beyond words. To the people in Porte Allegre, you should be ashamed of yourselves. I don't give a fuck if I ever play your peasant infested third world city again. God bless America.”

Derek Sherinian is F-ing AWESOME! I always like him in Dream Theater and it's great to hear he is touring with a virtuoso like Malmsteen.

While Malmsteen's lyrics and message haven't always been to my tastes, noone can deny he plays guitar like a god.

I LOVE Junior Brown. Actually, I need to add add a dozen or so other guys when I get the time. John Hurt, Jorma Kaukenen, Big Bill Broonzy, Roy Book Binder are just a few I have in mind.

"OK, Yngwie fans - what CD of his should I go out and buy first?"

Well, you should buy Steve Vai's new CD Alive in an Ultra World. You can download some older stuff from the site -- his version of Amazing Grace (from the Dudes soundtrack) is on the front page. To see a video of him playing the national anthem, try here. Yngwie's alright, but he's bland after a few songs.

In troubled times you really get a chance to see what people are made of. Obviously this man is made of the right stuff.

Thank you Mr. Malmsteen.

I agree. And he thinks the blues is limited and thinks he is a master of it too. I have news for him. He has no feeling and it all sounds so planned.

We need a tour lineup of Yngwie, Ted, Ozzy and Alice Cooper. Alice always wondered why we didn't bomb the hell out of Vietnam.

Oh my goodness! What ever did we do to make the Brazilians hate us so?

Memo to Liberal and Libertarian America-Bashers: let's get the touchy-feely types down to Porte Allegre pronto to grovel and beg forgiveness.

Memo to Bush and Powell: perhaps the poor Brazilian people need $300 million of our taxpayer money in humanitarian aid to make them like us better. Apparently that's the emerging US strategy in Afghanistan.

Haven't heard Malmsteen since high school. Didn't even realize he was still in the business. Great guitarist. I'll have to dig around in my old tape collection. Very patriotic dude, it seems. I believe he's Swedish. Looks like he kicked some anti-American ass!

I too will have to dig out my old Yngwie albums (on vinyl).

His music and his ego do get old, but in this case it's "Eagles Up!" to Yngwie.

It's funny you should criticize Yngwie while plugging Steve Vai. I think both are great technical players, but absolutely soul-less. Still gotta admire Malmsteen for taking a stand though.

"I don't give a fuck if I ever play your peasant infested third world city again. God bless America.” God Bless You, Yngwie.

God Bless America and F*** YOU ALL

It doesn't have the cadence of "let's roll" but it's starting to sound like my personal attitude...

Thanks, Yngwie.

"Memo to... Libertarian America-Bashers: let's get the touchy-feely types down to Porte Allegre pronto to grovel and beg forgiveness."

Forgiveness is a tennant of your religion and political philosophy. In the future, please refrain from projecting your sorry beliefs onto libertarians.
