Thread III
Last night, Herb Meadows' life was abruptly taken by an unexpected fire in his home.
We are blessed with our association with Herb Meadows as our Internet Campaign Manager and friend. Herb blessed the lives of everyone he touched as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, political activist, and United States Marine.
Herb was part of something much bigger than most of us ever get an opportunity to experience.
Herb Meadows embodied the passion and the commitment that has made America great. We have all suffered a loss by his passing, and yet we were fortunate to be blessed by his passion and commitment. In his work, he brought hope for change and inspired us to make a difference for our country.
At Americans for Fair Taxation, it was our privilege briefly to glimpse the love for our country and the commitment to excellence thatcharacterize Herb. Our gratitude for that experience cannot be expressed in words.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you, Herb, for the passion, the courage, and the principle, that you exhibited, not just on a daily basis, but on a continuing, moment-to-moment basis.
It is this passion and dedication that will inspire us in the future.
It is the model of your tenacity that will help us in moments when self-doubt threatens to overcome our commitment.
Thank you, Herb, and may we honor you by continuing your work in making the river of myriad voices seeking fundamental improvement in our country flow swifter and faster than even you dreamed possible.
Thank you for touching our lives in a most extraordinary way.

I just have to say, however - if I'd known his first name was "Herb" I'd have given him a lot more shit around here! ;^)
LOL...CHIEF woullda got a chuckle outta that. I've met a lot of great folks in my various FReeps and the CHIEF wasn't one of them...I'm very sad about that. Now, I really wish I wouldda gone to the FReeper Ball last January...you never know when yer next chance is gonna be to meet that many great folks in one weekend!!
So...when are you and me gonna argue in person?!

Life is so short and unexpected, I think we all have learned that lesson very hard on Sept 11th, and now with what happened to the Chief, a much beloved poster here....
We all should try to honor him by making every moment count, Love our Country, be tough but take time to find humor when things are tough.
Turned down? Chief just got accepted in an Higher Corps. I can just see the Angel High-fives.
I was always interested in tax reform, even when the details of the Clinton Club Hedonism was irresistable to follow. It seemed like the threads about tax reform were just too vanilla for most here when GIF animations of Janet Reno criss-crossing our nation lovingly with Donna Shalala were so readily handy. But man ... pigdog, CHIEF, taxman, COB1 and a few others were a wealth of info about the pros and cons of implementing flat and/or sales tax systems, reducing capital gains etc, what was happening (or not) regarding these proposals in Congress, what we should do etc. Real stuff. The info they'd provide here I'd cut and paste and send to my Rep JIm Ramstad, who was on the Ways and Means Committe in the House. Important stuff, that unfortunately not enough of us got behind to stem the tide, even under a GOP Congressional helm, of an increasingly complex and onerous system. Too bad for us.
CHIEF took this issue very seriously, because he understood that a meaningful reform of our Tax Law was the first, and most important, step to recovering our individual rights and freedoms. Defund the bastards, and the bastards melt away. We talked about eliminating employer withholding, forcing the zombies to write a biweekly check to the gubment, and the tax revolt that would soon occur.
We agreed that when the tax bills reached conference, we were going to start a bloodless coup, temporarily seizing Senate GOP doormats and installing the new CHIEF Negotiator to help move Archer's plan. And, we'd install a guy named "Pigdog" too, just so Rangel had a peer.
Some things in life, MUD, have no upside.
Thoughts and prayers are with his wife, family, and friends. May time and the knowledge that he is at peace make the pain of loss bearable for all.
How about when the Packers travel to Jack Kent Cooke stadium in January 2002 for the NFC Wild Card game? ^;) I'd shake your hand and buy you a cocktail anytime MUD.
That would work except I don't believe there will be but two wild cards this year due to the lost week. Plus, the Skins will win their Division, as the Packers may as well. After the Pack's great start, I can't believe yer projectin' them as Wild Cards!! SHEEESH...what kinda fans are y'all CheeseHeads?!

The sentiment is mutual, mi amigo...MUD
My fault, MUD, I didn't make myself clear. After the Packers shut out the Rams in the NFC Championship game at Lambeau Field - I'll buy you copius Hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's in Celebration of the Green and Gold's SuperDome shut out of the Raiders for their FOURTH Super Bowl title, and the 350th overall championship of their storied history. We had Lombardi you know. I'm sorry if you misunderstood my original statement.
Ohhh...hmmm, so you've got the NFC Eastern Champs--the Washington Redskins--losing to the Rams in the first round?! With Smoot, Bailey, and Green at corner, we actually match up pretty well with the St. Louis "O"...we'll see, won't we?!

What you have to understand is that the "back and forth" that you, the CHIEF, pigdog, I and all the others engaged in was not personal, it was business. We, for the most part, could agree to disagree without being disagreeable.
What is tragic about all of this is that we have lost one of FReedom's true warriors, and his shoes will be very hard to fill. But fill them we will!
And, lewis, pretty soon we'll be debating taxes again. On that, you can go to the bank.
Appreciate your comments.
