A 53-year-old man died in an early morning house fire in southeast Houston today.
The man, whose name has not yet been released [I confirmed that this was, indeed, my FRiend, Herb Meadows, known to all of us on FRee Republic by his screen name, "CHIEF negotiator"] was found by Houston firefighters in a bathroom in the rear of his home in the 8000 block of Glencrest, after the house burned about 1:30 a.m.
Firefighters said the man's wife told them she was watching television in the home's living room when she heard a loud pop and her husband shouting from the back of the home.
The woman tried unsuccessfully to rescue her husband, firefighters said. She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation symptoms.
Firefighters said it appeared the man tried to get out of the burning home, but the heavy smoke entered the bathroom, where he collapsed.
Arson investigators are at the scene of the fire this morning looking for its cause.

I'm so saddened by this. How tragic. I'll be praying for his wife and I'm thankful for the time he spent here sharing his views.

I saw this on the news this morning when I was getting dressed for work, but they didn't mention his name. Imagine my shock, and grief to read these emails tonight. My heart is just broken that something so tragic could happen to such wonderful people as Herb and Belinda.
Aside from his dedicated work for AFT and fundamental tax reform, he was a warm and wonderful person and a true friend to many.

I've met very few of you freepers in person, and never Chief Negotiator; but I feel like we are a family, and Chief Negotiator was an important part. My prayers are with Chief's family and friends.

A
BWAHAHA master was our Chief!!
Prayers up for his family...perhaps the CHIEF and I will have a peace-pipe together someday on the other side.
I'm heartbroken over this!!
However, I find comfort in the fact that he is reunited with his dad and his beloved mom...How I Long For Mother's Arms...this was soooo sweet.
I cry now, but I also give praise that we knew a man with such heart and such laughter. God bless!

How very sad.
Chief was always one of my favorite Freepers and I will miss his contributions to the dialogue immensely.
Semper fidelis and rest in peace.

Meant to hail you to 435. I know you find some words for us!

and BKO, as well! I go to the "wall" often to contemplate (or grieve) over FR's very personal losses.
To: freedomson
"Hail to the CHIEF", indeed. Prayers for his family and friends for strength and comfort in their loss. General Patton said "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." Peace.

A few years ago, Noel & I barely survived a lightening-induced house fire; we lost many of our "creature" family, & survived with seconds to spare!
Our heartfelt Love & support to the "survivors!"--Anything we can offer them is theirs if we can get it!

Stunned! I didn't know him personally but I did read his posts.
Especially about the out of control taxation of the U.S. Government and his
goal to end excessive taxation. my condolences to his family.
September hasn't been a good month for America.

I am so very sad to hear this.
CHIEF was one of the very first, if not the first, to welcome me to FR. I always enjoyed reading his posts.
My condolences to his family and friends.
