A 53-year-old man died in an early morning house fire in southeast Houston today.
The man, whose name has not yet been released [I confirmed that this was, indeed, my FRiend, Herb Meadows, known to all of us on FRee Republic by his screen name, "CHIEF negotiator"] was found by Houston firefighters in a bathroom in the rear of his home in the 8000 block of Glencrest, after the house burned about 1:30 a.m.
Firefighters said the man's wife told them she was watching television in the home's living room when she heard a loud pop and her husband shouting from the back of the home.
The woman tried unsuccessfully to rescue her husband, firefighters said. She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation symptoms.
Firefighters said it appeared the man tried to get out of the burning home, but the heavy smoke entered the bathroom, where he collapsed.
Arson investigators are at the scene of the fire this morning looking for its cause.
The tax reform movement lost a wonderful friend.

I had JUST sent Herb some files on the NRST for his daughter's use in a speech she was to make.
I never even SPOKE to Herb, but felt as if I'd KNOWN him all my adult life. He WAS a lover of liberty and a kindred spirit -- and will be deeply missed.
For what little comfort it may afford his loved ones, I offer this small token of respect for what Herd stood for:

I'd like to think Chief's just shifted positions to better fight this war we're in.

I just cannot believe this! Read his post and the thread about his wanting to re-up with his beloved Marines!
Dear Lord Jesus - our hearts are breaking. Plesae send comfort and help to this great man's family and loved ones -and help all on Free Republic to do whatever we can in his memory to stand tall for America now at her greatest hour of need.
How can we best honor CHIEF?
Ideas are welcome.

Dear Father in Heaven - take good care of our friend. And help this country and its people to stand up and be counted for our best ideals and for freedom and for our blessed Free Republic as our nation was founded.....as Chief did with every breath he took!
By God's grace and strength, let us resolve, to remember our friend, the "CHIEF", and to spring into action for our country - in the best way poissible each of us can contribute.
But, how we will miss this great American patriot!
