POST BOOMERS/PRE X - finally, a thread just for us - Thread 6

Posted on 10/02/2001 9:09:10 PM PDT by WIMom

Last night, there was an anti baby boom thread that started with a rant, and before some disruptor trashed it, some of us who were born at the tail end of the baby boom - from 1956 to 1964 - were having some nice recollections. The things that we seem to have in common are the following:

1. We were too young to serve in Vietnam, but remember the news.

2. As far as we're concerned, the music, television and popular entertainment and heroes of the 60s were and still are a matter for personal taste, and don't represent the shining apex of all civilization, icons to be revered by generations to come - in short, the Beatles were just a band that some might not like, and old Trek was cheesy and not well written.

3. Old boomers came into adulthood at the ideal economic circumstance - we've had to work for ours.

4. Our clothes and music tended to be lighthearted, and we are more conservative/libertarian as a whole than the older boomers.

So post your memories of tunes, movies, shows, fashions, school stuff, etc.

And enjoy yourselves!

Thanks to one_particular_harbour for the fantastic idea!

I remember the year my mom tried to lose weight by getting "diet shots." I think it was around 1969. That Christmas was wild. All the gifts were decorated with these elaborate Christmas scenes--sleighs with reindeer, Santa faces out of copious amounts of yarn, bells made out of styrofoam, etc. Mom had LOTS of energy that year, I'll tell ya....

My mom has angels made out of magazines folded just the right way, with a styrofoam ball on top, spray painted gold. Beee-yutiful. ;)

My mom made an entire fake fireplace out of cardboard and plastic bricks. Every Christmas we would haul it up from the basement and hang our stockings on it.

"My mom & dad didn't have money for the real Barbies, so we got the "12-inch doll"

Yeah, I got one of those too and felt pretty miffed. All my pals had the real thing. Eventually they got me an official Barbie and all was well. Funny how much those things can matter to a kid.

Your story about diet medicine reminds me of my friend's mom, down the street. She got one of those bust enhancers that consisted of a firm spring with a plastic sort of paddle on each side. You were supposed to press this spring together repeatedly - "we must, we must, we must improve our bust" . . . Anyway, we girls had a lot of fun sneaking around and giggling about her mom's bust enhancer, which she undoubtedly thought was safely hidden in a bedroom drawer!

If you read Marvel comics, were you a member of F.O.O.M.? If so what level of membership did you obtain?

I WAS a member of FOOM. Don't remember mebership levels, wasn't that with the Merry Marvel Marching Society?

I've still got my membership kit in that big Hulk envelope.

Hey, remember the FOOM "Create a Super-Villain Contest?" The winner was supposed to have his creation become a villain in the Marvel Universe. This was back in '73 or ' 74, but they never did it...

Until a month or two ago, in an issue of "Thunderbolts!" For real, after 28 years... go to a comic shop and check it out. I'm sure it's still on the racks.

I thought I'd die without go-go boots. I begged and pleaded and finally mom got them for me. I suspect the whole family ate beanies and weanies for a week to make up for the hole in the budget. Good old mom.

They were so much cooler before you actually played with them. Spend 5 minutes setting them up, turn it on BUZZZ BUZZZ VIBRATE VIBRATE VIBRATE and then watch the guys go every which way. It looked liked two teams of blind men.

What is her name!! You know girl from "Dumb and Dumber", she started her career on Edge of Night. That was a great show. I don't watch soaps anymore, I did watch AMC until Opal and Jenny went off that show. I guess Sopranos and Sex and the City are kind of soaps. I look forward to each of these during their respective seasons.

No, actually that is an excellent point. I was born in 1960 and I did receive a vaccine with that machine gadget they used, yet my sister who is just 3 years older still has the scars on her arm.

Conclusion: you were born before 1960.

I was born in 1968. I don't remember a "machine gadget", but then again, I was pretty young when it was done and don't remember much at all about the Big Vaccination Doctor Visit except bawling my eyes out...heck, I did that till I was in my teens. :)

I wonder what year health policy changed regarding this?

I understand the smallpox vaccine was given through 1972.

What was the cutoff date regarding use of the gun?

And, at what age were these shots administered?

What was the reason for public health policy change regarding the use of the gun?

That's very interesting, considering the only info I've found about the vaccine is how to give it by hand, with a bifurcated needle and a fairly painful, drawn-out process.
