MOTHER ANGELICA PLEADS FOR PURGING OF "OTHER" TERRORISM IN U.S.

Says we can't keep offending God here and expect that He will bless our other efforts

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, October 1, 2001 (LSN.ca) - On the Sept 25 Mother Angelica Live program on Eternal World Television Network (EWTN), (www.ewtn.com) Mother Angelica made an open appeal to President Bush to first halt the social and other terrorism in the nation. The world famous nun stated "I don't think, unless we tackle the terrorists in OUR country, we can expect God to protect and guide us".... "We can't keep offending God here then ask for his blessing here. It's not going to work".

Mother Angelica, who is the founder of the Catholic radio and television network that is heard by millions around the world, had just returned to the program on Sept. 25 after a ten day absence caused by multiple strokes suffered just after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The strokes have left her with slightly slurred speech, some unresponsive facial muscles and the need to wear an eye patch over one eye because she is unable to close the eye lid.

The aftermath of the New York/Washington terror obviously weighed heavily on her as she was recovering from her strokes. While expressing great empathy with the attack victims, praising the President's speech to Congress and acknowledging that the U.S must bring about justice, Mother Angelica broadened the necessary strategy to win the battle. She identified pornography, abortion, child prostitution, the spread of drugs, the destruction of youth by an immoral media and the suppression of religious expression in public places as "other" terrorism that must be addressed. She stated that abortion has deprived the nation of millions of people who would otherwise be there to defend the nation. The influential nun summarized, "I think some drastic anti-terrorism has to be done in this country - to make us free - to make us filled with trust in God. Then, then you (Bush) can do the work that you have been given to do. And then the almighty God from on high will be with you, and with this country, and with the world."

Mother Angelica ended her comments with "We must be brave and we must accept our penance. We must also change".

Please stop trying to hijack this thread. It isn't about you and your authority issues. This woman is basically repeating a very old truth that a house divided against itself cannot stand. The more we clean up our own evils, the stronger we are to fight evils from the outside. This is not hard to understand.

A lot of Protestants, let alone Catholics, would give Angelica a hearty amen on the changes that would be good for America.

Heres one from ole Protestant me. Amen Sister.

It sounds like you would love the big government police state in our private lives. And you call yourself a conservative? What a laugh!

No one (especially proud2bRC) is calling on big government to police your morality. I believe Angelica and Proud2bRC and all of us who agree with him are calling upon us to police ourselves. If we live lives of decadence and tolerate leadership that permits the scourge of abortion, shall we expect God to help us in our time of need?

The words of a prophet are seldom welcome.

Mother Angelica ended her comments with "We must be brave and we must accept our penance. We must also change".

Mark 1:14-16 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"

This country has given up the fight against the terrifying AIDS virus by not punishing those that spread it, nor isolating the sick people. Our gutless reaction to the AIDS epidemic can only follow with gutless reactions to muslim nations. Come to think of it, I do not know which is worse, being dominated by ISlam or Marxism, or by AIDS spreading gays and other promiscuous monsters.

In this time of crisis it is important to focus on immediate threats and put others on the back burner in a unified action, however the point is that there seem to be a free for all on this nation amongst dark forces and infestations of this world. America is not only open competitive ground for business, but also for those who want to conquer it and rule the world with ruthlessness. That's in fact the very concept of a whore ... . Whore of Babylon.

Campion -- many very respectful and spiritual people I know were ill/woozy/strange feeling before this happened. They just had a bad feeling. Ongoing prayer was their solution.

I am absolutely not disrespectful - in times past our Spiritual leaders almost literally "took on" evil that was rampant. Or manifested signs of the crucifixion. That was the direction my comment was going.

It seems as though my comments were completely misconstrued. Mother Angelica speaks my mind. She is at a level far beyond many of us.

How many of you have seen "The Song of Bernadette" and her suffering? Or read the story of Padre Pio and his manifestations of Stigmata. I've been to Conyers where the Virgin Mary has been observed..

There is a difference between being empathetic and empathic. Truly spiritually blessed leaders have many times manifested the sins of the world -- taken them on for us.

That was the direction of my comment.

I hope everyone did take it down -- as well as my other comments. I've been a member of FreeRepublic since March of 1998. Those who remember when I posted regularly know my spiritual disposition and know that my comments are totally reverent, totally spiritual, and absolutely not disrespectful.

There is a big difference between the words "empathetic" and "empathic". Many of the truly great -- and perhaps unknown -- spiritual leaders of our time have "tuned in" to evil and taken it upon themselves, manifesting it as stigmata and other physical maladies.

Before there is a rush to have me banned, perhaps some question as to what I meant would have been in order.

Alethia,

Thank you for this clarification. Please accept my SINCERE apologies! (Honestly, before I replied I looked up "empathic" on Merriam-Webster.com just to make sure I wasn't jumping the gun.) Apparently, even after looking it up, I was indeed jumping the gun.

There is such a culture of arrogance, condescension, and hatred here on Free Republic that I have become defensive far beyond my natural disposition. I have led a relatively sheltered life. Although I have tasted anti-Catholic and anti-Christian bigotry in person, I've never seen anything like it here on Free Republic.

So my response was formed in the crucible of this defensiveness.

Again, my sincere apologies. It's good to be humiliated every now and then. God uses it to humble us. I've been humbled. I was totally incorrect in my response to you.

In His Peace,

Dr. Brian Kopp

many ...people ...were ill/woozy/strange feeling before this happened

I'm beyond worrying about the opinions of others on this thread, so I'm just going to share this.

On Monday night, 9/10/01, at midnite, I had a long, gut wrenching talk with my wife, about many of the things I've been thinking about over the last 8 to 10 years. I know God is Father, and that a loving Father does indeed chastise and discipline His beloved children. I was starting to lose hope, for I thought maybe God had just abandoned us to our stem cell research and cloning and abortion and homosexuality.

I knew better than that, but in a strange way, now that the chastisement has begun, I am relieved.

I know that when my child sticks a screwdriver in an electrical socket, his mortal life is in danger. I have a duty as a father to discipline him, if I love him, so that he will never again engage in such self destructive behavior. The discipline must be so overwhelming and swift that my son would never think of doing it again. (This has happened with my youngest son. I disciplined him in such a way that it got his attention, corrected his behavior, and he will never think of doing such a self destructive thing again.) Sometimes discipline involves actively doing something to correct the child's behhavior. Sometimes it is letting the child learn for himself the danger of his acts.

With two of my children, we had a problem that they had no fear of the ocean. With both of them, I let them go in too far into the surf, and allowed them to be rolled up the beach by a wave. They were no worse off, but learned a fear of the self destructive behavior very quickly. I permitted this to happen; I did not hold their head under water but allowed them to be chastised by something beyond their control, a wave.

Honestly, before 9/11/01 I was beginning to despair that God still cared enough to discipline us. we were walking too deep into the surf of immorality and destruction of innocent human life, and God let a wave roll us up the beach.

There are those who will shout, "What about those innocents? God would never allow that!" In response, all I can say is Re read this post above, as well as this oneDifficult Questions Regarding the Terror Attacks
