. . ." And now all this outpouring of love for the country. All these tributes and overtures. Mostly by people who had to actually go out and buy a flag so they could raise it for the first time in their lives.". . .
One cannot judge the rest of the country strictly by what one observes living in the Upper East Side of NY. On this point I disagree with the author.
However, as to how long the displays of new "patriotism" will last . . . ? ? ? Time will only tell . . . but for me, I am enjoying the patiotism of the "new" patriots.

I have lots of flags and fly them from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. This year they went back up of course on 9/14. I admit I had to buy one for my vehicle.
I still marvel at the local public elementary skool whose outdoor message board reads: GOD BLESS AMERICA. How long that will last is anyone's guess. Even without mentioning God however, this hopefully has had some positive impact on a generation that is being taught they are citizens of the world.
The fact that local street vendors are able to give the public what it wants (flags, t-shirts) before the letter-Marts can get them shipped in from China, well to those guys I say more power to them! Free enterprise -- the law of supply and demand is still in tact.
If this awakened some dormant patriotism, so be it. Those with a conscience will perhaps realize they should have been a little more red-white-and-blue all along; those who have no conscience are a lost cause in any event.
This is an excellent article however, because I had many of the same feelings as the flags were raised -- along with our national pride -- once again.

And any minute now I'm expecting Elton John to re-dedicate his "Candle in the Wind" for a fourth time to the Twin Towers: "It seems to me you lived your lives like two candles in the wind

Mostly by people who had to actually go out and buy a flag so they could raise it for the first time in their lives. It's sort of like the person who cries the loudest at a funeral-usually the person who had the most problematic relationship with the deceased and so, after the fact, has the most to feel guilty about.Succinctly put and dead on accurate.
