Umm, sorry to bust your bubble, but your list of hundreds of targets would be mostly made up of rubble and invisible caves. Do you really think they are stupid enough to stand around waiting to be bombed? All their bases have been deserted for 2 weeks now. The only way to get anything done is by search and destroy infantry missions. Bombing civilians in an impoverished nation will not win hearts and minds or help the Northern Alliance, which are your allies. Air power by itself has never done much, even when the US/Britian tried to exterminate the Germans by fire bombing all their cities into rubble. The war factories were underground in hardened bunkers.

I share your concern that there are still "sleepers" out there waiting to take action. But I feel that if they haven't been found by now, they probably won't be until they strike again. And they will likely strike again soon whether or not we take military action in the days ahead. I say take out as many as we can right now and starve out the survivors during the long winter ahead. In the meantime, we shall continue to turn over every stone elsewhere, looking for sleepers.

Just our luck. First the Viet Kong, now the King Kong.

I've always been partial to Donkey Kong!

Top American officials have said the US will not play to the strengths of the Taliban militia, which is considered masters of gorilla warfare.

That reminds me of the movie 'Captain Ron' where Kurt Russell and Martin Short are on an island in the Caribbean and Kurt Russell tells Martin Short not to wander because there are gorillas on the island. Martin Short laughs and tells Kurt Russell that that is ridiculous because there are no gorillas in the Caribbean. So Kurt Russell tells Martin Short it's his funeral and lets him go. Shortly thereafter, you see Martin Short marching back towards Kurt Russell with a bunch of guerrillas sticking the rifles in his back. All the while Kurt Russell is just looking at Short and shaking his head. After a couple of seconds of this, Martin Short can't take it anymore and he starts screaming at Kurt Russell "You said GORILLAS not GUERRILLAS! You said GORILLAS not GUERRILLAS!"

Stavka2, no one is looking for a large scale ground assualt at this stage, niether the troops or the logistics are in place. Any near term actions would be air assaults, and we DO have the capability for large scale air assults against supply lines, the Taliban front lines, and selected Bin Laden camps. I would expect near term ground assaults to be limited to special targets, and to be carried out by the special forces already on the ground and those forces nearby that can be there in short order. Special forces have been on the ground for over a week, and if anyone here thinks there haven't ALREADY been SOME interaction with Bin Laden's forces, you've got your head in the sand....;)

Bush has repeatedly said that he wants to "smoke them out". I'm certain his words are genuine and literal.

I'd suspect lots of hype to create an in-country atmosphere that promotes flight. Once the rats crawl out of their caves they're again subject to the laws of technology and superior force.

The hundreds of targets I alluded to WOULD BE those caves that you speak of. Civilian areas would not be targets. The CIA knows where most of them are being that they helped build them during the 1980s.

Granted, we aren't going to get all of them. In fact, the main purpose of the initial assault would be to drive the Taliban deeper into these remote areas. Then we can focus on cutting off supplies and starving them out.

"Thank GOD the grown ups are in charge! I do fear most Americans are blind to how defining and precipitous a moment this is in history."

Well put.

I sense that many yuppie Americans are in denial and focusing on with getting back to "normal". Although I sympathize with and cried along with the families who lost loved ones in the atttack, it might be a good thing to keep the images of the attack - the bloodied women survivors and NYC smoking - in the public view lest we lose our sense of outrage.

This is not a Bruce Willis movie. This is our present and future reality. We have an enemy who seeks to destroy us, our children and our way of life.

I also thank the God the Father and Jesus Christ that we have a God-fearing President Bush, along with Powell, Rumsfeld, Rice, et al, in control rather than Algore and that limp-wristed bunch of weasels that sold our country out for the last 8 years. DO YOU REALIZE HOW CLOSE WE CAME TO HAVING GORE AND TIPPER IN COMMAND AT THIS TIME? (Excuse please, I am overcome by a wave of nausea).

The Clintonians reaped the benefit of, and claimed credit for, the economic turnaround engineered by Reagan and Bush Sr., along with the security afforded by our military buildup and collapse of the Soviet Union, and gave it away. Now they lay blame for the recession at the feet of W, who has not been in long enough to enact his plans, and must deal with the greatest threat and attack on our country in history, made possible by the sellout of the President (Hillary) and Mr. Clinton... Arrghhh!

Bombing caves? Cutting off supplies? You are thinking on a conventional level, the exact thing that caused the US loss in Vietnam. You aren't dealing with people who are going to drive truck convoys with food and ammo. In the country side, where Shari law has been the norm for a milinia...the Taliban actually has a lot of support. All most need do is walk to the local village, if they aren't already living there. What are you going to do, hunt a lone truck or a couple of pack mules in a country the size of Texas and covered in mountains? Love to see how many US planes go down on that one. Only infantry sweeps can do the job, with the associated casualties that go into these things.

As emotionally appealing as your senerio is wouldn't you agree that to cause OBL to flea and be located about 60 kilometers inside Iran's boaders would be preferable.

Afghanistan has few high value military targets, little or no infrastructure, limited technologic capabilites and a southern government (Taliban) composed of non Afhgans. I think we'd rather leave the killing of Muslim clerics to the Northern Alliance and concerntrate our resources on the real problem....Iran and Iraq.
