Possible attack on Afghanistan
US on the prowl from north

ISLAMABAD: The United States military juggernaut is ready to jump into action against the Taliban of Afghanistan any time now, The Frontier Post has learnt.

The Pentagon's big hammer will fall on its target from the north, reliable sources told this scribe late Friday night.

"Although General Powell has said there will be no D-day for this war, Saturday night's action will be the nearest thing to eruption of a war," said a diplomat privy to details of the operation.

US ground forces stationed in Tajikistan are likely open assault of the Taliban territory from forward bases of the opposition Northern Alliance, he said.

The ground assault will be preceded by surgical air strikes in the frontline areas and probably deep into the Taliban territory.

As well, the Pentagon is making sure air cover for its ground forces.

Top American officials have said the US will not play to the strengths of the Taliban militia, which is considered masters of gorilla warfare.

On the other hand, reports have suggested US and British Special Forces are already in Afghanistan.

A report on Friday said US forces had conducted scouting missions in Afghanistan.

It now appears that the Special Forces already in Afghanistan have gathered the necessary cartographic information to pave the way for a conventional assault.

It is possible that these troops, so far involved in exploratory activities, will join action when the assault from the north starts.

They may seek to converge on a strategic point or strike their own targets in concert with the northern assault.

The Frontier Post has also learnt of unusual activity in Pakistan's Chitral area bordering Afghanistan.

Chitral is in the geographic proximity of Kabul, and has a modern airport.

The apparent goal of the US military action is capturing alleged terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden and hundreds of his followers.

Bin laden is prime suspect for planning and ordering the September 11 horror attacks in the US.

However, Pakistan has been apprehensive of a US move to overthrow the Taliban government, which is has openly resented.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some action tonight or tomorrow.

We were told by a contact in a Senator's office not to send some folks to DC in the next two weeks, that he would meet with them back in the state instead, because these people "might be uncomfortable in DC in the event something started happening overseas." They haven't been hesitant for us to come visit between Sep. 11 and yesterday.

Grunting, beating your chest, and tossing the kids around when they bother you too much.

There has undoubtedly been some SF scouting action already. Fragmentary reports indicate that SAS elements were in country very quickly (maybe even pre 9/11).

The US might be delaying a full scale military assault for several reasons. Remember, OBL is fighting a global unconventional war. He probably has sleepers all over the world. Wouldn't it make more sense to completely roll up his foreign networks BEFORE an all out attack in Afghanistan? This might take several more weeks if not months, given the ineptitude the CIA and FBI have shown already.

Other than the timing, I agree with your analysis.

Exclusive hidden camera picture of Mullah Omar!

Now we know why the Taliban is so good at gorilla warfare.

This might take several more weeks

I've heard Afghanistan loosely compared to Colorado in terms of climate and terrain. When does "winter" start in Afghanistan? I remember a guy dying in a plane crash in the mountains of New Mexico in the winter. Authorities let his body "overwinter" there because it was too unsafe to go in and retrieve it. Aren't we either in a big hurry or a big wait (as in Spring) to put ground troops on Afghanistan?

Thanks for the tidbit. I get the impression things are afoot. We've have nearly three weeks to mobilize and to set up targets. We have plenty of resources in place for a massive air assault. Also the timing is right politically. By waiting this long, the world cannot say that this is a kneejerk or trigger-happy reaction. We have given the Taliban every reasonable chance to hand over Bin-Laden.

I see a massive assault followed by several months of "mopping up." It will be a cold winter for whatever is left of the Taliban. If they hide in the mountains, they are going to have to have fire for warmth. And our satellites are so sensitive that they can pick out individual streetlamps in major cities. Lighting a fire this winter is probably going to have some explosive results! Hope the Taliban brought plenty of blankets to the mountains with them!

So who exactly is going to launch this "assualt"? A few US Spetznaz teams? 18th Airbrone Corp is still in the US, so is it's subcomponent, the 82nd. As for heavy armor out of germany, which would be needed for the "assualt", sorry to inform the ignorant Paki reporter, but it takes a hell of a lot longer then 2 weeks to move 2 divisions some 1,500 miles and prep them for an offensive...not to mention moving the required logistics to support them. This article would be more realistic in say: April 2002....since extreme winters are the norm in Afghan.

Bwahahahaha! Now the Taliban will take the prisoners away and cave in a building over their infidel heads - thats how they deal with gays over there.

Ouch...kind of reminds of how the Witches of Salem were crushed underneath the weight of several large stones piled on top of them.

RD, you're right about the Rumsfeld "D-day" quote.
shortstop, we should send PETA over to investigate the gorilla abuse, shouldn't we...

Well the time is about right to initiate military action. I wouldn't be surprised to see some action tonight or tomorrow.

I wouldn't either Sam, but then again, I wouldn't be suprised if we did not either. Actually I would expect to hear something in the next few hours if there is any ongoing action. By the way, I think you have some excellent military strategy in your post, I think we should get you out of your armchair and send you over to Afghanistan right away, lol...;)

Latest intelligence reports confirm that the Taliban Gorillas have amassed huge stockpiles of armament including large mounds of big sticks. They have also been suspected of collecting dung in piles in preparation for manual launch.
