Clinton Library Plans to Bulldoze Slave Landmark

Fans of America's "First Black President" are sure to be dismayed over plans to bulldoze a historic house built by slaves that had the misfortune to be located on the grounds of the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Ark.
"An 1890s historic freight depot..., built by former slaves, is in impeccable condition and part of the historic train station and bridge Clinton has vowed to preserve," says U.S. News & World Report's "Washington Whispers."
But the Clinton Library team has nixed any idea to save the structure, saying it's too late to incorporate the depot into plans for his post-presidential shrine.
Local preservationists are crying foul and cite a Clinton Library Foundation document stating that one of its primary goals is preservation.
They warn that America's so-called First Black President will be remembered for "pushing to destroy one of the state's first black-built structures."
Hopes that Clinton would change his mind when he visits Little Rock next week were dashed when a spokesman in his Harlem office said he had no plans to tour the library site.

There isn't anyplace else in Arkansas to build his library? There are buildings in Europe that are a thousand years old and are still being used, and this 100 year old building is gonna be torn down. This kinda stuff is my pet peeve, and annoys me to no end.

I'm not surprised. He's already taken the zoo money from "the children" and now this. Amazing. Anything for Bill.

Your reply # 12 is right on target.
If a Republican had proposed the destruction of the landmark in question there'd have been hell to pay. Now? Nothing. That's the Clinton era in a nutshell. It can be summed up in two words. "Free Pass"

I thought presidential libraries were intended to hold all the historic, imporant documents created during that president's time in office. Given that the only significant mementos of Clintoon's administration were not documents but a blue dress (since returned to its owner) and a used cigar, I should think they could preserve the old slave house and just fit the entire library into the outhouse (along with a Montgomery Ward catalog as toilet paper, of course).

The gifts, my dear. They have to make room for all those gifts! (And for all their unsold books!)

"Spokesman from his Harlem office, said he had no plans to tour the site"...
No plans? The purpose of Clinton coming to Little Rock is to "meet with the Chamber of Commerce" people. The NEW Little Rock Chamber of Commerce building is on the waterfront not more than a few blocks from his "library site", as well as all the major downtown hotels and convention center.
Clinton NOT visiting his library site when he visits Little Rock is like saying "Clinton never had sex with that woman"!

Kwaesi Mfume (no idea how to spell his name) should have SOMETHING to say about this, shouldn't he? Imagine if a Republican were going to bulldoze that landmark! And I wonder whether Bill will hop on the bulldozer for a photo op?
To: areafiftyone
This story should be taped epoxyed to every lightpost in Harlem around his office.
To: areafiftyone
Was that the one that Bill saw burning back in the 60's?
Oh, never mind.
To: areafiftyone
The irony and symbolism of this act relative to his 8-year reign of terror appears to have escaped His Royal Hindness.......

Clinton Library Foundation document stating that one of its primary goals is preservation.Preserving the impeached *Squirt's liegacy, no doubt...

Well that SOB will not get away with this I can asure you that I and Rev. Peterson will be raising hell about this one and where are Maxie Waters and the rest of the spineless members of The CBC???
To: Trueblackman
I wish you and Rev. Peterson luck. I am sure most African Americans would be shocked to find this out. I know they aren't even aware of this because it hasn't been mentioned in any of the mainstream media. These landmarks are a part of our American History and must be preserved. There is a slave burial ground that was found on a construction site in downtown NY and because of the importance of this site we stopped all construction and are now taking great care to excavate it. I am sure it will soon be made into a landmark for people to visit and learn from. He is a hypocrite and a liar and in my opinion does not even deserve a presidential library. I am from New York and when I see him on TV talking about the WTC tragedy I get so sick. In my opinion he and his beast of a wife are not a New Yorkers and never will be. :-)
To: DoughtyOne
its more than a free pass it is not even mentioned. I wonder if Harlem even knows about this. they are so hypocritical
Actually its more than hypocritical they are out and out liars could care less about black people or anyone else.

I know what you mean, winodog!! I never thought I could feel such an undescribable mess of negative emotions! I am a fairly new FReeper, and I know I have to be going overboard with it, but I've finally found a place where I can vent my frustration over the past eight years without being censored! (Local paper publishes my columns, but will not publish anything political, because they [my pieces] favor the conservative viewpoint. Rat bent rag!!) Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!
I will pray about it soon. Gotta let a few more anti-x42 and anti-PIAPS sentiments out first!! ;-}
