In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. The Soviets did so for a number of reasons. They feared Islam as a threat, since communism insists on a lack of religion. The Soviets also desired a warm water port on the Indian Ocean; the Soviet Union had no seaports that were ice-free, year round.Dear Mr. Daly, Afghanistan is landlocked. Other than this nitpick, nice article!

You said "nipples". Heh heh heh heh.

Be there or be square: THIMMESCH

I know that; there would have been further expansion.

I know that; there would have been further expansion. Okay. I would make that a touch more clear in your website posting, lest someone conclude that that was in error. But as I said, excellent job nonetheless!
To: Lazamataz
Oh, I agree with you that it was unclear.
This was a very difficult thing to write. I have found it hard to organize my thoughts or actually motivate myself to write since the 11th. And when I was trying to, I was finding that I could not decide where to start (with Bin Laden? with Clark? With the protests? With beatbackbush.org? With my personal feelings about the 11th?). But with the 29th approaching, I could not let it go any longer, and I had to leave out a few things (perhaps another article's worth, with some additions) and I did not get to rework some parts of the article (such as the one you pointed to) that probably should have been wordsmithed.

Check this out. And can you
believe we were suspicious of this guy 'way back when' when he first showed up at FR? HA!
Nice writing, Gerry.

*laugh*
That's OK, HalfIrish is still suspicious of me.
I think he thinks that deep down inside, I am a Yankees fan. ;-)

An interesting thing about Clark becoming AG under Johnson. His father was a sitting Supreme Court Justice at the time, having been appointed under Truman IIRC. Whichever President had appointed the elder Clark had come to believe that appointment had been his greatest mistake.
When Ramsey Clark was appointed, many believe it was done to attempt to force the elder Clark to step down, which he did in fact do so as to avoid conflicts of interest.

You're welcome -- it's always a pleasure to MEGA-BUMP Hugh Akston's fine work.

Hmmm.
"august11horror.com" I wonder if this indicates, like the September 29 date, that other dates were given serious consideration. I wonder when September 11 was chosen, and how the choice was communicated to all the hijacker cells.
I wonder how the people who shorted airline and insurance stocks could be sure enough by Sept. 5 to bet money on it.
