AND CONSEQUENCES there will now be. As usual, though, the enemies of freedom and enlightenment have underestimated their main, modern enemy, the United States of America. It is not often that the U.S. fully unsheathes what our Battle Hymn of the Republic calls the "terrible swift sword." You did not know we had a battle hymn? Oh, yes. And a lot of people are suddenly singing it. It is not every day or every year or every decade that America's antagonists can pierce the patient quality of U.S. defense deeply enough to elicit the shock, anger, and outrage that now cause Uncle Sam's hand to reach for that awful hilt of the greatest sword man has ever devised.

To the enemies of freedom and enlightenment, to the perpetrators of Dark Ages acts of barbarism, heed the following. You have—as a Japanese military official once said with shivers up his spine—finally awakened a sleeping giant. So think twice. This president does not have the hesitancy that his predecessor had. Today's president has already drawn the sword. There is none so formidably dangerous as a patient, intelligent general. Mr. Bush is such a man. If you have assumed otherwise, the error is yours. It will multiply your sorrows.

Excellent, excellent post! It was no accident that "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was chosen to end the service at the National Cathedral. Nor was it an accident that "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" was chosen. President Bush and Mrs. Bush were personally involved in the planning of that service.
