I Was Wrong About Bush

Edited on 04/23/2004 12:03:33 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

What a difference 10 months make. Last November I broke the unwritten rule that requires journalists to be neutral political observers when I got embroiled in the controversy over the presidential election and publicly supported Al Gore.

It was not just with friends that I passionately argued the election had been stolen and that Mr. Gore would be the better president. I was one of the signatories to the pompously titled "Emergency Committee of Concerned Citizens 2000," which took full-page ads in the New York Times demanding a revote in Palm Beach County, Fla. I wrote op-eds for Salon.com and the New York Daily News. On television talk shows from MSNBC to Fox News's popular "The O'Reilly Factor," I made the case for Mr. Gore. In thousands of e-mails, I urged voters to deluge Clay Roberts, director of Florida's Division of Elections, with appeals for a recount.

**I can still hear Julia Roberts saying something to the effect of "Republican coming between repulsive and repugnant" or some such insulting remark.**

Actually, Roberts said "Republican" could be found in the dictionary between "reptile" and "repugnant". And, you know, she's right.

Then I looked up "liberal" and found it was between "libelous" and "Libya". After that, I checked out "Democrat" and found out it was between "demented" and "demonic".

This is an incredible story - in the San Diego Union Tribune, there was a letter to the Editor, stating almost the same thing - the whole page was dedicated to people who wrote the paper about the President's speech. I was stunned!!

George W. Bush was surely born for such a time as this. And ... because he has been obedient to God, and has been seeking God's wisdom, the anointing has been poured out upon him to sustain him through this difficult time. But, the anointing is what attract's people to him - God is amazing!

Something else thei president did; he acted quickly to ground all planes, and took other actions that may well have averted further terror attacks 9/11 ... and he did it without taking a damn poll to see which way the wind was blowing and how the sheeple might react regarding his approval ratings with whichever actions he could take! Such previously simple job description tasks are seen as 'salvation' with the x42 deviant still fresh on our minds and goreghoul skulking about in the background with his 60's radical beard.

I voted for Bush. But, if he continues the policies he has announced; national ID's, increased wiretapping and surveillance, etc...Bush is moving towards a socialists agenda.

Bush didn't announce national ID's..others have and Bush has expressed a clear reluctance to adopt such measures.

Of course increased wiretapping and surveillance where there is sufficient cause is perfectly acceptable.
Perhaps you would like to ban all surveilliance so terrorists can organize and plan their atrocities while the good guys hide their heads in the sand?

Welcome home, Gerald! It is very refreshing to hear honesty from liberals.

I read Mr.Posner's book about JFK and found it quite illuminating. I was a firm believer in a conspiracy before I read the book, but now I belive Oswald acted alone. He presents compelling reasoning and evidence why this is so.

Not sure if this article proves Posner's ability to change his mind is an act of courage or simply confirmation of a herding tendency.

Well, at least, some positive reader feedback (see my posts above - hint, hint!) might be effective in herding Posner and his editors in the right (pun intended) direction!

Yes, but who does she think she is, saying inflammatory insulting things like that? She must think she's got an opinion worth listening to and she can go around saying tacky tastless things such as this without regard to the actual people she might be speaking of. Sure, I'm just a slightly pudgy housewife living on a shoestring in Oklahoma and I don't have 2 mil to give to those poor folks in NY, but I have more manners than to say such insulting remarks about anyone.

gives soapbox a good swift kick under the sink.

Very good point. The Democrats may also have been slow to start rapidly searching the country for more culprits, because of their PC crap. Still, I think Bush has plenty to accomplish before being called "great". I certainly do believe that he is up to the task. A sign of the times that what he has done so far has been so marveled.

Of course, I did not know whether the election had gone for Mr. Gore or George W. Bush. As a partisan, I did not care.

This illustrates a key difference between liberals and conservatives. The left feel as if they have some sort of divine virtue on their side that allows the ends to justify the means. A conservative is interested in seeing that the rule of law prevails, regardless of the political impact of the outcome. The liberal philosophy is why Clinton was not removed from office. They couldn't assert that Clinton was innocent of perjury, witness tampering and obstruction of justice, so they made it all about sex. Plus, wasn't the economy doing great? The reality was, like the OJ jury, their guy was going to win, and hang the evidence.

Here's a good test case--Rudy Giuliani is ineligible to remain mayor of NYC due to term limits. Most good conservatives, myself included, consider this an unfortunate set of circumstances, given the groundswell of positive feelings Rudy has generated. But, most good conservatives don't want the law to be overturned. We don't practice situational ethics. None of us on the right wanted the Constitution overlooked so that Clinton could serve for a 3rd term, although such musings were heard on the left. The law is the law. Obey it, or get it changed.

Mr. Posner should be congratulated and welcomed aboard.

He's surly one of the very few liberals who can admit when their wrong. Quite refreshing.
