Employee theft is alive and well

This is pathetic, these people should be tracked down and prosecuted. Sometimes there's more to the story though. I know one man who was recently told not to come to work anymore when his company failed. They owed him $4000 in wages he was never going to see (according to his manager), so he kept his company laptop. It's prolly only worth $700, but it's something. And, he told his boss he was holding on to it til he got his money. Taking a look at e-bay, there's an awful lot of expensive, sophisticated equipment up there for sale for pennies on the dollar. It's definitely coming from somewhere and people somewhere are definitely losing money on it.

If you are interested in this sort of stuff and especially the demise of dot coms and related companies, there is a wonderful site call "F**kedCompany.com." You have to first figure out what letters are represented by the "**" and then go there. Some entries start off with the $160 MILLION in venture capital money that was spent on things like that couch over 24 months and then, there was nothing.

I say set an example. Local authorities need to go overboard a bit and pursue the thieves with extreme persistence so that they can be brought to justice. Then alert the media and maybe others will be scared out of repeating the "swipe goods after being laid off" crime.

Well, the flipside of the coin are the laid-off tech workers who were stiffed by the bankrupt companies. they may feel they're just taking equipment in lieu of a final paycheck.

There are no doubt some cases in which employees are getting stiffed by the company and are trying to recoup something, but I'm sure the vast majority of this is just plain old thievery.

Really short-sighted and stupid for these folks to do this. The economy will turn around and they will be back applying for Tech jobs. Might even be a company that requires a security clearance. These thefts will most likely show up on a polygraph or a simple background check.
