Whooping It Up: In Beirut, even Christians celebrated the atrocity.

BEIRUT--Where were you on Sept. 11, when terrorists changed the world? I was at the National Museum here, enjoying the wonders of the ancient Phoenicians with my husband. This tour of past splendor only magnified the shock I received later when I heard the news and saw the reactions all around me. Walking downtown, I realized that the offspring of this great civilization were celebrating a terrorist outrage. And I am not talking about destitute people. Those who were cheering belonged to the elite of the Paris of Middle East: professionals wearing double-breasted suits, charming blond ladies, pretty teenagers in tailored jeans.

No Christian celebrated this atrocity. Perhaps some that imagine themselves to be some sort of Christian did, but no actual Christians did.

Exactly. Just because one attends a "Christian" church or calls oneself a "christian", does not make one so.

"My people have been crushed under the heel of American imperialism, which took away our land, massacred our beloved and denied our right to life. But have you seen what happened in New York City? God Almighty has drawn his sword against our enemies. ?"

How did "American imperialism" take away their land or deny them any rights? This is the kind of thing the Marxists used to say all the time, which makes me wonder if our problem in the Middle East isn't as much Marxism as Islam.

The Arabs of the Middle East live in wretchedness imposed by their own despotic governments and stifling social traditions. Yet somehow these people have convinced themselves that their problems are caused by Israel and the United States. Many seem to believe that life would suddenly get better in the Arab world if they could kill all the Jews and Americans.

--- Maronite Christians --- I think the Maronite's are a Lebonese/Syria faction of the Catholic Church. THAT might explain their loyalty to the MiddleEastern people and their perceived plight of same.

It seems pretty simple to me: they figure themselves to be an infalibale master race. They believe that by virtue of their religeon, they are holy and God loves them. All who are unlike them, then, are unholy and God hates them. They can do no wrong, we can do no right. The next logical step in this thinking is that they have a God-given mandate to rule the world, crushing all who oppose.

It's not an uncommon theme, really, if you take a look through history. Religeon controlled governments and peoples of all kinds have adopted this mentality. Christians, Muzlims and pagans alike.

These nations always fall hard. Sometimes they need a little help, though. I think we should give these folks all the help they can handle.

Really interesting. I guess I'll get a good laugh too..... When the Dome of Rock  is bulldozed off the Temple and Mecca is nuked to smithereens. A lot of people will be laughing and buying drinks for each other

What a hoot!

There is no way to combat this logic with real logic. They will never "like" us or want to be on a friendly nation basis with us. For our own safety, we must show these nations that it is to their benefit that they not piss us off.

On Thursday night, in the Christian northern part of Beirut, we heard some loud noises. "Probably they are celebrating the attacks," someone told us when we asked.

This statement is based on hearsay. For one thing we don't know who was celebrating. Or even what the noises were from.

A couple we know, who are our best friends, are Orthodox Christians. The husband is from Lebanon and has been in the US for at least 20 years. He LOVES the US and HATES the muslim extremists that have murdered some of his family members. My husband and I have learned from this man what it's like to live under constant threat because of one's faith.

BTW, we're going to his home today for a little target practice. Being able to protect his family from outside threats has always been a top priority of his and now ours, too.

Oh indeed it is, and it is the same Marxism that dominates our campuses in this country. We've let them have our educational system for way too long, I think that is a big part of what Bush would like to correct in it.

We can point out the obvious differences between the term "Christian" and miss the entire point of this article: I don't see how our justified response to the WTC attack can possibly be surgically clean enough to avoid further energizing/arousing the Arab world.

Because of our (I think proper) support of Israel I'm fairly convinced the WTC attack will lead to a world war. Please prove me wrong.
