Bush snub no oversight
Toronto Sun ^ | Friday, September 21, 2001 | Bob MacDonald

U.S. President George W. Bush's non-mention of Canada in his historic speech last night may have been much more than a thoughtless oversight.

It just might have been deliberate -- a highly noticeable-to- Canadians way of indicating he is not getting the kind of all-out cooperation from Prime Minister Jean Chretien that he feels the present crisis demands.

For starters, Chretien has been dithering about including Canadian fighting soldiers in a U.S.-led force to go after international terrorists. And U.S. Ambassador Paul Cellucci got a kind of brush-off Wednesday by Immigration Elinor Caplan when he urged the U.S. and Canada work out a common system of handling visitors, immigrants, refugees or terrorists at our border. Caplan mumbled something about Canadian "sovereignty" possibly being threatened.

Perhaps Bush was trying to send a wake-up jolt to Chretien, despite Canada's contributions of help after last week's disaster and the loss of Canadian lives. His message: We are in a tough, real war against international terrorism and we want you to be with us 100%.

For instance, in contrast to Chretien, Canada's far-off sister Commonwealth nation, Australia, has promised full military support, including fighting troops to back the U.S.-led forces.

"There is no point in a situation like this, being an 80% ally," declared Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

He contended that an all-out effort had to be made at this time or people in free and democratic societies such as Australia (and Canada) will be forced to live in an increasingly fearful and threatened world.

Now, that's the kind of determined attitude Bush was talking about last night when he declared: "Every nation in every region now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

Bush made it very clear that the enemy in this war will be terrorists like Muslim terrorist Osman bin Laden and his global network of mass murderers.

"The enemy of America is not our many Muslim friends; it is not our many Arab friends. Our enemy is a radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them," said the president.

"We will direct every resource at our command -- every means of diplomacy, every tool of intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial influence and every necessary weapon of war -- to the disruption and defeat of the global terror network."

And that's the only way it will be accomplished.

However, Chretien keeps hanging back in making a commitment of fighting troops to the cause despite a national opinion poll this week that showed 79% of Canadians want a full military effort to disable the armies of countries that give safe haven to such terrorists. And 77% said Canada does a poor job of preventing terrorists from operating here.

However, Chretien may be afraid of offending the leftist, anti-American voters that have voted for him or the increasing number of Muslim voters.

If so, maybe that's why the federal government has been so zealous in not releasing the names of the estimated up to 60 Canadians killed in the attacks. And why Chretien didn't go to New York to view the disaster area -- or to Washington to see Bush as such leaders as British PM Tony Blair.

The foreign affairs department says their identities are "private" and media inquiries are referred to the U.S. government. So far, the names of only 11 of the Canadian victims have been filtered out by the media.

You get the feeling that the Chretienites don't want them known because media coverage about so many individuals and their suffering families might infuriate their fellow Canadians -- and increase demands for full military support.

And, on another front, Chretien is looking worse daily -- especially when he made the nutsy statement that there were no terrorists in Canada. That flew in the face of his own Canadian Security Intelligence Service that reported 50 terrorist groups and 350 individuals existed in Canada.

Now we have the report yesterday by Sun reporter Tom Godfrey that revealed a Middle Eastern man by the name of Nabil Al-Marabh lived in Toronto until six weeks ago and is believed to be the same man that the FBI agents arrested in Chicago in connection with last week's attacks. Unfortunately, Canada's longstanding reputation as "sucker nation of the world" in running a sieve-like immigration and refugee system is still intact.

But the heat is on to get with it 100% in going after bin Laden. And also in toughening our weak immigration system.

The blood of the 6,333 killed in the American attacks demands it. So does the blood of those nameless, anonymous Canadians.

I don't think a nation that harbors terrorists such as Canada will need to worry about having its buildings taken down. I just hope they don't mind the imposition of the strict Islamic code of Sharia law.

A good friend of mine from Calgary put it this way, "My guess is that Canada will do what it does best - stay out of the way, be invisible, but in the end act like they were behind us the whole way."

I have no quarrel with Canadians, but frankly I think this is exactly the way they will behave, at least officially.

Mexico has harbored terrorists for a hundred years or more.

Why, in 1916, we had to send Black Jack Pershing and his friends way into Mexico to chase Pancho Villa, who shot up an American border town.

Poor Mexico, so far from God, so close to the United States.

Bush didn't snub Mexico and Canada. Those countries are part of "America" dont-ya-know. Therefore, they are part of the collective victim here just as the United States of "America" is.

The US was becoming a Canada. It is a shame it took an attack on our country to wake us up.

one has to understand that French Roman Catholic Quebec, controls the federal government in Canada. Quebec has a long history of US bashing, hence Chretian's reluctance to take a stand. In addition, the ruling government party depends on the immigration vote for their support at the polls......don't expect overt support from up north!

Thank you for posting this and adding your thoughtful and supportive words.

I've been aghast at Chretien's behavior in this mess, even though I expected it. Chretien needs a conscience transplant. He's acting just like blubba did, ostrich with head in sand, while building his campaign chest to stay in office so terrorists can strike while his head is in the sand. Such behavior is a disagrace to the people he was elected to govern and protect. He may change his tune if, God forbid, Canada finds itself in a defensive mode for the same reasons we did on September 11.

No I don't think so--they are considered part of the Commonwealth, as is Australia, Bermuda, New Zealand, etc. "Great Britain" and the "United Kingdom" refer to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

"Isn't Canada part of Great Britain? Was Bush's exclusion simply that he didn't say "United Kingdom?""

No.

Didn't those millenium terrorists come over the border from Canada? Maybe we should just seal off their border like Pakistan did with Afganistan!

"It is sad how far to the left that Canada has gone..."

You have no idea...................

Tax rates are worse than ludicrous. Socialism abounds. I dare you to get into a discussion of our Second Amendment rights with a Canadian.............I just DARE you. Health care? It's a joke.

Look, the Canadian people are as cool as they come. Just plain GREAT folks. I like 'em a lot. They're honest, hard-working, etc., etc. However, they have handed their governments (note the plural) over to ultra-Leftists and are reaping what they sowed. I worry about 'em. Damned shame, actually............BUT, I don't blame the average Canadian for their idiotic leaders. Sometimes even Americans...............ahem...............get snookered, right?? (e.g. the last 8 freakin' years...........)

We Canadians are true and loyal friends of the USA and are deeply embarased by our government and our PM. Please do not judge us by how they act.

Thanks, cuz...

We can relate... after 8 years of Klintoon we know exactly what it feels like to have one's leader & one's self marching in absolute opposite directions.

I was listening to BBC dissect the speech on the radio, and they had some leftist leftover from the Bobby Kennedy staff making disparaging remarks, calling Bush arrogant and sneering. They did have some woman mildly disagreeing with him, but it was two against one. The thought that the one guy was an American was appalling.

Yes, I do have some idea, and I almost cry for my canadian friends up there. I am in Vancouver BC almost every other month for a week, and some of the engineers I talk to have as much as 75% of thier money taken in taxes, I was stunned, but they get health care and all that other garbage. Health care? what a joke!!!

No, I feel VERY BAD for my conadian brethren, how could they let this happen, It's a disaster!! No wonder some of them want to become a state of the United States. I told them, SORRY, don't want it, come to the right, get rid of that "health care" system and maybe in a few years we can talk. But, get control of your socilaists first.

I tell them that if they want we will trade them, all our socialists, for all thier ULTRA right wing conservatives, these are about center in our government!! Then the socialist can finish destroying themselves up North, and we can save ourselves, by shipping them up there!!! LOL

I'm a Canadian proudly living as an American here in the U.S. Let me provide a bit of a factual primer to help explain Canada's role in all of this. 1. Prime Minister Chretien is a bumbling, self-centered, socialist jerk-off and an embarasment to most Canadians, especially in matters of international affairs. He is our Prime Minister only becuase (a) he is from Quebec, which is mandatory it seems to get elected Prime Minister (even though most Quebecers hate him), and (b) the individual politicians that have opposed him in recent elections are some of the most stupid, corrupt and outright unsupportable losers you would ever want to meet. Hence, Canadians either hold their nose and vote for Chretien or don't vote at all. Al Gore would have chance in Canada, come to think of it. He's enough of a socialist enviro-weenie to pass for a Canadian politician. 2. The Canadian army exists. But he is home with the flu right now. 3. There is a Canadian navy. But its propeller is currently under repair. The elastic band broke. 4. There is a Canadian air force. The two guys in it man a U.S. radar station near the North Pole. 5. I can't say whether or not the bumbling Canadian government will take a pause from kow-towing to the country's various special interest groups and slap on a pair of brass ones to deal with this situation. But I do know that the VAST majority of Canadians are standing side by side with the U.S. Keep in mind that over 25,000 Canadians put on U.S. uniforms and fought in Viet Nam. Our government may be full of complacent pussies. But the people are ready to join the fight.

"Thanks, cuz..."

Believe me. Chretien is FAR behind Canadians on this issue.

Apart from the hard-line leftists,(5+% of Canadians), most Canadians are all in favor of placing the scorpion on the barbecue.;^)
