DEA Should Become the ASA (Air Security Agency)
Vanity | 20 September 2001 | Kenyon

It’s at times like these that anyone with an ax to grind or an agenda to advance weighs in with their pet project as the solution to our troubles. Those who have long advocated the crazed use of tactical nuclear weapons do so now. And those who have been waiting for an opportunity to curtail our civil liberties are clamoring for swiftly passed legislation to do just that. So I’ll be up front and disclose that I’ve long thought the money spent on the “War on Drugs” has been a waste of time, energy and resources.

With that in mind, now is the opportune time to change the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) into the ASA (Air Security Agency). No doubt many of the fine civil servants of that agency would welcome the opportunity to defend the nation at this time in a war worth fighting.

Merge DEA, Customs, INS and place them under Defense Department as the BDA (Border Defense Agency)

Apparently many are not aware but we already have a Sky Marshalls program. We have had it since the early 70's. So see, there is no need to take people from the DEA or anywhere else... We just need to put these guys into service, but yes I think we should take the DEA and put them on our unguarded borders where they should have been all along.

Yes, the DEA has been so effective in solving the drug problem that we should defintely let them fight terrorists.

The DEA already has an ASA. Asa Hutchinson, to be exact. :-)

Personally, I think there's a pretty good case against us for bombing the poorest people in Columbia with that agent orange wannabe stuff. We bomb left wing narco terrorists while the DEA pays right wing death squad narco terrorists to smuggle the stuff out and weapons back in. They just nailed a Peruvian General we've been paying a million bucks a year to deal in the stuff for the last 10 years, Won't see that on the nightly news.

There's already an ASA and it has nothing to do with air security.

I'll second the motion. DEA,ATF, BAtf, many FBI and DOJ ! They couldn't, wouldn't and never will be anything other than tools of those who want to surpress our Freedoms further. Wake up America ! Marobe

No offense, but have you thought this through.

Think of how well the DEA has met it's objectives in the past.

Now, imagine how safe the air will be if we put them in charge of airline security and they do as good a job at that as they have at their previous objectives.

Also, do you expect that the will find some new respect for the Constitution. Or is it your position that airline passengers deserve unconstitutional abuse from their government.

Well, a hijack attempt is obvious enough that even a DEA Keystone Kop should be able to detect it. Since most of them can manage to draw and fire a weapon without shooting themselves in the foot, I think they can manage.

Excuse me, did you mean this sarcastically: "Think of how well the DEA has met it's objectives in the past. " If you were serious, have you been out of country since 1965 or so ??? The DEA hasn't accomplished anything but to terrorize Citizens, infringe on rights, obscond with profits, and waste tax dollars at an unpresedented rate. Drugs are as readily available as in 1965, better and more variety. Marobe

Did you read my whole post? Or did you stop at the line you quoted?

If the sarcasm wasn't obvious, read the whole thing. Especially the last line.

Further, I have no doubt that we won't use the DEA for air security. But I have every confidence that the federal government will hire "Air Marshalls" that have just as much respect for the constitutional rights of citizens as the average DEA agent.

</sarcasm> <! In case you couldn't tell>
