Let's roll,'' Flight 93 victim heard to say minutes before crash Pennsylvania field

By JOANN LOVIGLIO, Associated Press Writer

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - ``Are you guys ready? Let's roll!'' is an expression Todd Beamer used whenever his wife and two young sons were leaving their home for a family outing.

The 32-year-old businessman and Sunday school teacher said the same thing before he and other passengers apparently took action against hijackers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on Tuesday, shortly before the plane crashed in a western Pennsylvania field.

The jetliner, which government officials suspect was headed for a high-profile target in Washington, was the fourth to crash in a coordinated terrorist attack that killed thousands, and the only one that didn't take lives on the ground.

``He was gentle by nature, he was also very competitive, and he wouldn't stand for anyone being hurt,'' said Beamer's wife, Lisa, who was told of his last words by an operator who spoke to him. ``Knowing that he helped save lives by bringing that plane down ... it brings joy to a situation where there isn't much to be found.''

Todd Beamer placed a call on one of the Boeing 757's on-board telephones and spoke for 13 minutes with GTE operator Lisa D. Robinson, Beamer's wife said. He provided detailed information about the hijacking and - after the operator told him about the morning's World Trade Center and Pentagon (news - web sites) attacks - said he and others on the plane were planning to act against the terrorists aboard.

``They may have realized that (the hijackers) were planing to do the same thing with their plane,'' Beamer said Sunday in a telephone interview from her Hightstown, N.J., home. ``So they chose to do what they could to prevent other people from being hurt.''

Before the call ended and with yelling heard in the background, Todd Beamer asked the operator to pray with him. Together, they recited the 23rd Psalm. Then he asked Robinson to promise she would call his wife of seven years - who is expecting a third child - and their two sons, ages 1 and 3.

After receiving clearance from investigators, Robinson kept her promise Friday.

``People asked me if I'm upset that I didn't speak with him, but I'm glad he called (Robinson) instead,'' Lisa Beamer said. ``I would have been helpless. And I know what his last words would have been to me, anyway.''

Beamer said her husband placed the call at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday and told Robinson that there were three knife-wielding hijackers on board, one who appeared to have a bomb tied to his chest with a belt. The other two hijackers took over the cockpit after forcing the pilot and co-pilot out.

The jet was bobbing and changed course several times; the passengers knew they would never land in San Francisco.

``They realized they were going to die. Todd said he and some other passengers were going to jump on the guy with the bomb,'' Lisa Beamer said.

Several other passengers made phone calls from the jet before it crashed southeast of Pittsburgh: Jeremy Glick, 31; Mark Bingham, 31; and Thomas Burnett Jr. 38. Glick and Burnett said they were going to do something.

Todd Beamer dropped the phone after talking to Robinson, leaving the line open. It was then that the operator heard Beamer's words: ``Let's roll.''

Then silence.

Shortly afterwards, the plane crashed, killing all 45 aboard.

``Some people live their whole lives, long lives, without having left anything behind,'' Lisa Beamer said. ``My sons will be told their whole lives that their father was a hero, that he saved lives. It's a great legacy for a father to leave his children.''

Read it again. One of the terrorists had a bomb strapped to his chest according to Beamer.

This doesn't mean that there WAS a bomb -- it only means that the terrorists SAID they had a bomb.

Very similar to a statement by -- jeeze, I'm not sure, but maybe Whittaker Chambers -- that all men are endowed with the capacity for greatness/heroic action but not all are called upon to demonstrate it.

While we honor our proven heroes, we must not underestimate ourselves. If called upon, we will give our best; if necessary, our all. Keep faith and trust God to give every grace needed at any moment.

Just think, if we live right, one day we'll meet the heroes of September 11 face to face.

C.T. = "Conspiracy Theorist"

Michael Rivero was the foremost C.T. on FR. He recently posted a long diatribe accusing the U.S. Government of staging the attack on the WTC and Pentagon in order to bring on the NWO.

He doesn't play in our sand-box any longer.

True, but that wasn't what prompted my remark.

FWIW, do you really think that a gaggle of terrorists that had every intention of putting that plane into the White House or the Capitol Building or some target such as that, really would flinch at using a REAL bomb?

There was a good special on CNN (3 weeks ago tonight) on how they won't let females of any age attend school. They are all in poverty etc.

It's going to be a real shame when American GI's take all the cute ones and marry them. Maybe some of the lucky ones will see at least some nice Western-style living in their lifetimes.

Taliban loses on all counts!

Now THAT's real CT'ing! Sheesh... I don't know, we should give people like that a little room all for themselves. Let them discuss the grassy knool, did we really land on the moon, Site 51, and now the US's arranged attack on the WTC and Pentagon. fascinating to watch ... dumb, but fascinating.

These little children will not have a father but they will have a magnificent mother which is probably more important. She is entirely correct and an example of the mothers of ancient Rome or Sparta. Their father's heroism will give them an example few of us are fortunate to have.

This had to be an inside job. I can see getting the plastic boxcutters with razor blade edges through security. A razor blade will not set off the detector. But a bomb? These guys had help from the inside. Some one or ones let them on.

For all the bomb vs no bomb postees. I remember reading a few days ago about an eye witness. A farmer's wife hanging out laundry saw the plane fly over too low, heard a loud boom and then the plane did a swan dive and crashed.

The boys in the transport planes are proably getting out the Limp Bizkit CD's right now to keep on ROLLING!!

My question is, which track? Track 6 (Air Raid), or Track 14 (Urban Assault)?

My vote's for Track 6. :)

These men should be given the civilian version of the Congressional Medal of Honor..

Sorry, not enough. Hell Jimmy Carter was awarded that. NO, Congress should make an exception and award them the real thing, the CMOH. They were the first "soldiers" in this war and should be honored as such.

WRT the lives of women in Afganistan- while checking the CIA fact pages on countries today I was stunned to discover that there are more men than women in Afganistan in every age group. In advanced countries more boys are born 1.05/1.0 but by about the age of 6 the ratio changes and becomes increasingly in favor of women.

For this to be so different in Afgan. shows that women there have an incrediblely hard life even without the idiots in the Taliban. This lack of female influence is shown by the lack of civilization that the country exhibits.

Another interesting note is that it has 0 sq. miles of water. Incredible.

Yep, that is also possible. Still, to attack people armed with razors and while you also believe they have a bomb in a hi-jacked plane they intend to crash is definitely a Hobbesian choice.

The passengers of that flight deserve the Medal of Freedom. I suspect they will be just the first of many in this War. (I wish someone would come up with a name other than "America's New War")

Well, it seems to me that it wouldn't be consistent with their objective.

Also, I actually believe that bringing a bomb onto a plane is something that our current security measures would probably prevent.
