Madonna calls for peace at Los Angeles concert LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop diva Madonna led a prayer for peace Friday at a sold-old concert in Los Angeles, urging President Bush to show restraint in retaliating for Tuesday's attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. ``Last night, we had a moment's prayer for everybody who died on Tuesday,'' said the singer, who had opened the Staples Center show wearing a pleated skirt made from an American flag. ``Tonight I'd like to say a prayer for peace,'' she told the crowd of about 18,000 people. ``Violence begets violence, and I don't know about you, but I want to live a long and happy life, and I want my kids to live a long and happy life.'' Most of the crowd quieted down, but before the prayer minute was up, some people began chanting, ``USA! USA!'' She then urged the crowd, many of whom were waving American flags, to think globally rather than locally. Madonna resumed her tour Thursday night at the Staples Center after postponed her show there Tuesday in the wake of the attacks in New York and Washington. Security was heightened Friday at the auditorium. The Tuesday show was scheduled to take place Saturday, making it the last stop of her tour. Ticket-holders were asked to open their bags as they entered the building, which was staffed by extra officers and bomb-sniffing dogs. ``We're not doing this show because we want people to forget,'' she told the audience, which included such celebrities as actress Cameron Diaz and comedian Andy Dick. ``We're doing this because we want people to remember how precious life is.'' The concert featured an array of costumes, fantasy stage effects and elaborate choreography. ``It was horrible (on Tuesday), but I'd like to think of it as a wake-up call. There's terrorism every day all over the world,'' Madonna said, mentioning such countries as Israel, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. REUTERS
In the "WHO'S HOT" spotlight, they mentioned Madonna because her Hollywierd Producer husband would be producing her next movie.
In the "WHO'S NOT" spotlight, they mentioned Madonna's Husband because he now has to produce her next movie.
LMAO
I realize that as an "artist," history means very little to your daily life. I'd like to mention one name from history that you might reflect upon... His name was Neville Chamberlain, and was a Minister for Great Britain in the 1930's. He signed what was in effect, a non-aggression pact with NAZI Germany, and upon returning home to England, he declared "Peace in our time!"
Unfortunately, Hitler and the NAZIs used the pact to develop their military strength, and later, nearly took over all of Europe. We are now in a similar situation. The United States has taken little or no action to numerous terrorist attacks, and that only seems to embolden the terrorists. We are at a crossroads, where we can simply reflect that we don't want to escallate the violence, like Barbara Lee, or we can say, "ENOUGH!!!"
The saying that "fighting never solves anything," is only said by those either unable or unwilling to fight. There are some things that are worth fighting for... For instance, would you be willing to fight for the children that you claim to love? This time, the terrorists used passenger airliners... Next time, it might be anthrax, or even a nuclear weapon...
Give it some thought...

"For he (the ruler) is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil."

Madonna is simply one of the most recent proofs of H.L.Mencken's declaration that "No one will EVER go broke underestimating the taste of the American people."
(8 years + of the Clintons worried me. Bush seems to indicate that there MAY be hope for our recovery.)
And to where did she bolt? NYC...
Poor NYC -- yet ANOTHER tragedy wrought on it.
Really!!
Are you saying that she was given that name at birth?
Seriously, I have no interest in this woman's biography, but you seem to have knowledge concerning her early days. Goo, goo, goo....
Born August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan to a lower-middle class Italian-Catholic household, Madonna Louise Ciccone was the third and eldest daughter of Chrysler engineer Sylvio (Tony) Ciccone and French-Canadienne Madonna Fortin, for whom the future superstar was named. 'Veronica' was added to her name upon confirmation.
so that would be, just for review: madonna louise veronica ciccone

i'm prepared, if you respond, to get the same knee-jerk reaction seen most of last week toward anybody who even posits the notion that perhaps the united states should change its foreign policy to avoid unnecessarily aggravating, and in some cases nurturing these groups and their leaders (e.g., hussein, bin laden), or supporting tyrants within their countries (e.g., the shah of iran) via incessant cia action. so . . . no, i am not suggesting or otherwise associating with the idea that we should not react militarily to the 9/11 and previous attacks. i expect that to be completely ignored by anybody reading this, btw.
Next time, it might be anthrax, or even a nuclear weapon...
exactly. which is why we should take a long, hard look at why some of these terrorists are so angry in the first place, and see if perhaps we've been stepping on toes w/o getting any benefit. again, taking such intelligent action does not mean that one can't take other action as well. i have zero idea why so many normally intelligent (seemingly) freepers assume that, or see it as a sign of weakness. the stakes are much too high to let blind pride weigh in over reality. these people are angry over something, and they definitely claim to be angry because of our actions, not our inaction. ignore that at OUR peril. we're all in this together, and i'm not impressed by 95% of the blather. i think it's going to get more of us killed.
