The terrorist organisation headed by Saudi exile Osama bin Laden has cells identified or suspected in 34 nations and has become "a global threat to US citizens and national security interests," says a new report.
"In building this network, bin Laden has assembled a coalition of disparate radical Islamic groups of varying nationalities to work toward common goals - the expulsion of non-Muslim control or influence from Muslim-inhabited lands," the Congressional Research Service report said.
The report, made available yesterday, was dated Sept 10, the day before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Secretary of State Colin Powell identified bin Laden yesterday as a suspect in the attacks.
The assertion that bin Laden's Al-Qaeda organisation has links in dozens of countries is significant, given Powell's promise to carry out a global war on terrorism.
Once the US has liquidated those responsible for Tuesday's terrorist attacks, "we will continue with a global assault on terrorism in general," Powell said yesterday.
The report, written by CRS Middle East specialist Kenneth Katzman, said bin Laden is estimated to have dlrs 300 million in personal financial assets with which he funds a network of 3,000 Islamic militants.
It said Al-Qaeda cells have been identified or suspected in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Yemen, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, Algeria, Tajikistisan, Mauritania, S udan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Chechnya, Qatar, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Uruguay, Ecuador, Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, Britain, Canada and the US itself.
No,it's the ONLY way to insure you take them out. Nothing else will work. War ALWAYS boils down to the guys with the rifles occupying the other guys land at will. Anything less amounts to military mastrubation.
This IS what everybody including me are talking about for the time being. This is the immediate target,so you go after it immediately. We don't get bin Laden by going after the Red Army Faction,we get him by going after bin Laden.

The "public" will go back to sleep within 30 days. You can't rely on them,but we WILL need small teams dedicated to seeking out and killing terrorists.

Not really. Some of these terrorist organizations hate each other even more than they do us. What we are facing at the present time is apparant cooperation between radical Islamic terror factions.

Isreal is a small country that lacks some of the resources we have. It is true they have superb intelligence-gatherhing capabilities,but this is due to having Jews living in other countries all over the world. I think it is fairly safe to say they will share any intelligence with us that they have or get on radical Islamic groups.

Correct,and the way you do that is to establish the ABSOLUTE CERTAINY that we WILL track down and kill their leaders.Pretty soon you will find out that nobody wants to be a leader,and the sheep return home to their flock.
Trust me,you accomplish not one damn thing by killing one of their "soldiers". On the other hand,you accomplish one hell of a LOT when you make specific targets of their leaders. Leaders don't give a damn about the lives of their followers,but they DO seem to care a lot about their own lives.
