They just broke into the national coverage here to report that someone who had attended the pilot school in Florida had just been detained in Ft. Smith Arkansas. He was driving a red van with FL plates at the time he was arrested. At his home, apparently in Florida, a search turned up evidence of his involvement with the NYC and DC incidents on his computer. Sloppy for a terrorist, but that's our good fortune.
My apologies that I don't have a link--this story is not yet on any of our local news sites. When it comes up, I'll add the news text here.
FBI QUESTIONING FT. SMITH MAN ABOUT POSSIBLE TIES TO ATTACK
A Fort Smith man, Hady Omar, is being held for questioning by the FBI in connection with the multiple terrorist attacks that took place September 10 in New York and Washington.
Omar and his wife were reportedly taken in custody yesterday afternoon in Huntington, Arkansas.
We will have more on this story as it develops.
The FBI is refusing to talk about the matter. An unidentified man, photographed by local newsmen (as seen in today's newspaper), "was taken out of the FBI office at Waldron Place in Fort Smith at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday. He was transported in a Sebastian County Sheriff's Office vehicle to the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center [what we used to call 'a county jail']. A senior official with the Sheriff's Office "confirmed that the man had been placed under arrest, but refused further comment." [Note: the word "arrest" is the newspaper's, not mine. Also, the man in the photograph appears to be from the Middle East.]
"Earlier Wednesday, the FBI had issued a nationwide advisory asking law enforcement officers to be on the lookout for a Fort Smith woman who was wanted for questioning in connection with Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington."
"Supervisory Special Agent Dan Sturgill confirmed that the advissory was issued but would not say who the woman was or why she was being sought for questioning."
"'[There is] no warrant. We just want to try to talk to her,' he said Wednesday afternoon." "The advisory was canceled Wednesday evening. Asked if the woman had been located and questioned, Sturgill said, 'We've interviewed people in the Fort Smith area and we continue to conduct an investigation related to this matter.' He refused to give more details."
"Law enforcement broadcasts stated that the FBI was looking for Candice Kjosa of Fort Smith. The broadcasts gave the license number of her vehicle and said she might be traveling with a man named Hady Omar."
"A worker at the detention center said Hady Hassan Omar, 22, was being held at the detention center Wednesday night for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Information on charges was not available."
The rest of the article tells of the marriage between Candrice Dawn Kjosa, born December 25, 1972, in Fort Smith. Omar was born January 19, 1979, in Egypt. Law enforcement officials did look at the marriage license. A man and woman were taken into custody, but the woman was later released.
"FBI spokeswoman Debbie Weierman said late Wednesday night that to her knowledge no arrests had been made in connection with Tuesday's terrorist attacks. Weierman said she was not aware of the arrest in Fort Smith."
"A phone call to the Fort Smith FBI office at about midnight Wednesday was not answered."
"Fort Smith Police Chief Randy Reed said local police have been assisting the FBI in an investigation in Fort Smith but said he could not discuss the investigation."
Did he have a large bulbous nose, a forked tongue, and his pants down around his ankles. If so, please throw him in the Arkansas River. But weight him down first, in case he's a floater.
FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Hady Omar of Fort Smith is being held for questioning by the FBI in connection with the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and The Pentagon in Washington, according to sources.
Omar, 22, and his wife, Candrice Kjossa, were stopped in their vehicle in Huntington, Ark., at 3:15 p.m. after authorities were advised to be on the lookout for a red vehicle bearing Florida license plates, a match of the car the couple were in.
Omar is being held on a holdover order by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, an order utilized when authorities have a question as to the legal immigration status of a subject. Omar lists his place of birth a Egypt, while Kjossa lists hers as Fort Smith.
Kjossa was released from custody later on and is at an undisclosed location. Sources also indicate that a search warrant had been executed on the couple's apartment at Riverwalk Terrace on 5900 Kinkead Avenue. At the residence, authorities removed computer equipment and other items.
Ft. Smith, eh? Isn't that the place with the old three man gallows to show to the tourists? Hasn't been acutally used in over a centrury, though. Wouldn't it be prudent to see if the trap door still springs when the lever is pulled?
just received a cell phone call from a buddy travelling I-40 near Ft. Smith who heard this reported on local radio.
