Washington -- Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) used some of the harshest words heard on Captol Hill on Wednesday as he urged the United States to hit Afghanistan for its connections with Osama bin Laden: "I say bomb the hell out of them."
"We must strike the viper's nest -- even if he's not there. We know that the Taliban and the government of Afghanistan has nurtured Osama bin Laden for years," Miller said in the Senate.
"If there's collateral damage, so be it. They certainly found our civilians to be expendable."
Miller also expressed displeasure with the nation's reaction to past terror incidents.
"For too long when terrorist attacks have happened, it seems America's first interest has been to please our friends and then, if permitted, punish our enemies," he said.
"After yesterday, and from here on out, that must be reversed. America's first interest must be to punish our enemies [and] then, if possible, please our friends."
Rep. Mac Collins (R-Ga.), in a statement, called for "a swift, severe act of retribution" and urged that the threat of bin Laden "be eliminated. And if we find that someone else is responsible for yesterday's attack, then we should eliminate that threat as well."
Congress approved a resolution condemning terrorism and supporting "increased resources in the war to eradicate terrorism."
Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) said that the resolution "equates to a resolution of war . . . against international terrorism."
Cleland said he thinks the United States is close to identifying the terrorists, and that all options for response were "on the table."
A member of the Senate Armed Service Committee, Cleland said he has raised the prospect of a committee investigation into what happened, and why and what should be done in the future.
Cleland said committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) plans to hold a closed session today to discuss whether the committee should proceed with an investigation.
Rep. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) said in a statement that Americans should support "our military and law enforcement in their pursuit, capture and conviction of those responsible for carrying out this act of terror."
Indeed Zell, indeed.

I know I'm a very impatient person, but I can't be the only one who's getting a bit upset with GWB. It only takes about 25 minutes for an ICBM to cross the world - there should have been mushroom clouds over Afghanistan the day before yesterday.

These animals neither recognize nor respect our judicial system and what it stands for. To them, it's a farce. Their only language is violence. This is all they understand. So I say it's time to "speak" their language and send a message to them that they WILL understand. The time for courtroom trials is over! These cowardly acts deserve a swift and strong statement.

I am finding it hard to wrap my brain around the image of Hillary Clinton supporting retaliation, however...
Along with all the other obviously wrong things with that proposal, consider the fact that nuking Afghanistan is such a messy, long-distance option that you'd have no way at all to be able to tell if you had gotten your target (Bin Laden and his associates), or if they had been beyond range of the fireball, only to go into hiding and plan future surprise attacks on us.
No, it's better to do the fight up close and personal, at "whites of their eyes" range, so that you *know* you have neutralized them permanently.
When I set out to kill a snake, I'd rather skewer it with a sharp stick personally and know it's dead, than to poison the whole yard and then spend the next six months wondering if I'd actually killed it or not.
