1) 50,000 estimated to be working the time of attack.

2) 10,000+ estimated to be at the underground mall.

3) 348 firefighters are missing

4) 78-150 policemen are missing.

5) 266 people were on the four planes.

6) Somewhere near 150 people were probably killed at the Pentagon.


I estimate 45,000 deaths give or take 10,000 to be on the safe side. The precise number I reached was 54,134. Still, emergency officials first told occupants of the second tower to be remain in their offices and not to evacuate. The mall reportedly can easily handle more than 50,000 individuals at rush hour. The mall hits these peak numbers as commuters from PATH trains from New Jersey and various New York subway lines (A and E) stop at the Trade Center. Don’t expect speedy results on the casualty count. The bombing of 1993 – which only destroyed several floors of one tower - took more than six months to clear. Port Authority officials believe the casualty count will likely hit 20,000 and possibly more – just from persons working in the office buildings alone.

I'm going to be cautiously optimistic here.....
But so far they are not finding many bodies.
No long lines of body bags.
Maybe a lot more people got out than everyone thinks.
Maybe a miracle has happened and we havn't recognized it yet......let us pray.

Sorry but I think you're an order of magnitude off. There are tons of accounts of people on the 70th+ floor who made it out ok. You're describing worse case which we know didn't happen because of the time of day and the eyewitness accounts. I'm thinking the number will not reach five figures.

You are assuming everyone just sat at their desks or shopped in the mall while the buildings exploded, and then toppled. I have heard several accounts from people on various floors, and most of them headed out quickly. I also know of people who are missing at this time.

MAke no mistake, there was a huge loss of life on Tuesday. But, you're 'esitmates' are way off.

I keep thinking that the numbers can't be nearly that high. The blasts began before 9:00am...there was more than an hour for people clear the buildings, and surely people were not still streaming in to the building from the subways below after both towers were hit.

I have heard of people from fairly high up getting out with no problems, so I would expect the number of dead in the towers would be in the 10,000 to 15,000 range.

The reason they aren’t lines of body bags is because the bodies are under the rubble.

It's not likely they will given the pulverizing effect of the concrete and steel. Think: giant blender.

Sorry, but I think that my magnitude is dead on. There aren’t tons of accounts of people…your just having a perception. I have seen numbers of 1,700 injured. 1,700 a very small umber given the numbers of people involved. Didn’t you see the other facts like the people being told not evacuate? On The O’Reilly Factor one guy who did make it out said he didn’t even know the building had been hit by a plane until he looked out and saw the second explosion from the second plane attack. He went on to mention that he didn’t think the building would collapse. He said there was no announcements, no alarms, and no one told him to evacuate. My calculation factored in the people leaving the tower at 1 person every 2 seconds. The N.Y. Port authority is already revising it’s number of a “few” thousand to 30,000+ and now we know they have increased their request for body bags (6,000 to 11,000)

I was listening to one man on O'Reilly last night who got out safely from the second tower, who said that when they reached the bottom floor there were police there directing them to evacuate the building by going through the mall. If that was going on, there may be thousands of bodies still to be found in the underground mall, which will also be the last place cleared during the clean up.

As to your post from the LA Times ... FR has agreed to post only a lead-in paragraph, or snippets, from articles found at the LA Times and the Wash Post, with a link to the rest of the article(s), as part of the on-going lawsuit. If you posted the entire article, that's probably the reason it was pulled.

At the morning hour, the tower was probably about 80% occupied....many offices are on flex times becuase of the traffic, and also because many arrive early because of overseas financial markets.....Many who remember 93 left immediately because they remember the 93 bombing..It's really a question if thousands could get out in time before the collapse....I fear not...also, they won't find many "bodies" because bodues simply disintegrated..it'll be more like body parts, and small pieces of flesh......muchof which will be scooped up as they remore the rubble....the authorities are unsterstandibly NOt speaking of this now, but the need to IMHP,start to prepare the families of the missing....

When you find a part here, and a part there, you have to label and bag them separately.

National Public Radio just reported that Mayor Giulianni has requested 11,000 more body bags, in addition to the 6,000 body bags he ordered yesterday.

I dispute your 80% occupancy and it has been reported the 50,000 estimate was for the number of people at the time of the attack and merely some overall total for the entire day. Keep in mind that the mall alone could hold 50,000 people.

Most bodies were just squashed into an unrecognizable form by the imploding rubble. Each building is now a 5 story high pile of pancaked rubble and the bodies pancaked too.
