Klamath Basin water protesters dismantle camp in wake of East Coast terrorist attacks

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP)

Protesters withdrew from the headgates of the Klamath Project irrigation system on Wednesday, saying they did not want to cause more problems for the federal government in the wake of terrorist attacks on the East Coast. "We made an agreement with them that in light of our national emergency, we'd call a truce on this thing for right now," said Bill Ransom, a local businessman and member of the protest group known as the Klamath Relief Fund.

The government first shut off the flow of irrigation water to more than 1,000 parched farms in the Klamath Basin in April, reserving the water to protect the habitat of endangered fish.

But farmers who rely on the federal irrigation project have wrenched open the headgates four times since then.

"It certainly is a very favorable turn of events, something that Reclamation really welcomes," said U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spokesman David Jones.

AP only told story from their liberal viewpoint. Farmers proposed this but got something for it.They will put in a 54 inch bypass pipe around headgates.This will help them alot. I think it is going flow all winter..I think it puts farmers in good light as an injured party....who is helping the nation in a time of trouble by takeing less now. A friend in NYC said the first thing New Yorkers did was rush to the grocery store.

Bless the farmers of Klamath and America and someday this country will realize that they are our most important treasure.

Perhaps some of the resources used to protect unendangered species and fund the ESA should have gone to protecting the citizens and funding National Security.

The terrorist attacks are really helping the feds take away our rights, and people feel guilty now just to continue standing up for their rights.

The farmers are simply saying we will continue this in court not here. No rights are being surrendered. It was the "rights" of the fishmen and other parties which courts allowed to prevail over those of the farmers.

This issue is not dead by a long shot. Unless you are recommending surrender.

According to an earlier post the farmers cut a deal with the feds and are getting water.

Even if that is not true they have set the ball in motion which will continue to gain support for their position. There will be changes forthcoming in legislation and judicial rulings which will benefit them.

They gave a face to the victims of the ESA and have made its human costs known to millions of formerly unaware people.

They will win and deserve our hearty congratulations for their efforts. And THEY are intelligent enough to understand that their strategy and tactics must now change in the face of greater enemies than the ESA.
