Mayor Giuliani, who we can assume has as good information as anyone, estimated losses of "a few thousand for each tower" in a news conference that is ongoing as of 9:58AM.
I don't know how to compare horrific evils, but my first reaction was a bit of relief, because I had thought that the losses were even worse.

The mayor also said "
We will rebuild".
I live in Keyport, New Jersey. I've seen the Manhattan skyline, with the Empire State building on one side and the twin towers on the other, every day of my life, never giving it a second thought. I'll remember yesterday every time I walk out of my house and look over at the city.
I can think of nothing that would please me more to see those towers rise again from the other side of the harbor.

I disagree. The towers were considered top targets by terrorists and a collapse was achieved on both. Too many people in one place. I vote we build scaffolds for terrorists there.

I initially counted it at about fiteen thousand and that was before the towers collapsed. I hope he is right in his assessment and I am wrong in mine. Regardless, this outrage screams for vengance if it were only one life.

It's something we must do! Rebuild!!! Additionally I am a NCY school tescher. Yesterday I saw the towers go down from my classroom in Queens. It was my hope to open the schools today. These terrorists are after our spirit more than our lives. To close the schools gives them a victory. We cannot afford to give these evil souls a victory. All Americans must meet this with the courage and resolve shown by those New York cops and firemen who went into hell yesterday. They must be our models and our purpose.Their willingness to sacrifice must become the rallying point for all Americans. This is how we meet the murderers and terrorists. Not with the fanaticism of our zealous enemies, nor with hatred, though hate we feel. We must meet this terror with the courage and love that make us a free people. In the words of the scripture it is vital that we "be not afraid".
