Canada's No Model for U. S. Health Care

WASHINGTON -- Beware, for the champions of Canadian-style health care are sniffing around the halls of the Senate.

The ascension of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) to the chairmanship of the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee, where Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) sits as his closest ally on the issue, means that the backdoor drift toward "Clintoncare" will continue. For years, Kennedy has labored to bring socialized medicine to America. Hillary, sadder but wiser since her first effort on the issue failed miserably, is seeking an opportunity for vindication.

There's nothing wrong with the Canadian health care system, as long as people are honest about what exactly it is.

Socialized medicine is NOT a system that is designed to guarantee health care access to everybody. It is a system that is designed to slash health care costs while at the same time implementing institutional obstacles to limit the options of anyone who doesn't like it (either providers or patients).

And make no mistake about it -- Canada DOES have a two-tier health care system. The higher tier is called the United States.
