CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Superior Court Judge Ray Warren, who announced his homosexuality two years ago and then quit the Republican Party, said Friday he plans to join the race to succeed Sen. Jesse Helms.

Warren, now a Democrat, was elected to a term that runs until the end of 2002. He said he will resign from the bench in about a month; until then, rules of judicial conduct bar him from officially announcing his candidacy for another office.

``I think it's going to happen,'' he said. ``Legally and technically, I'm still considering (making a bid). I'm anticipating it will change.''

Warren, who lives in Charlotte, began his political career as a conservative Republican member of the state House of Representatives in 1985.

In 1996, he nearly unseated Burley Mitchell as chief justice of the state Supreme Court in 1996. Two years later, Warren lost another close race for the state court of appeals.

Soon afterward, Warren announced he was homosexual, making him the first openly gay judge and Republican officeholder in the state's history.

Warren said he doesn't think his sexual orientation will be a major issue. ``I would think it would be of some interest to some people, but less in the Democratic primary,'' he said. ``While we are thinking about the November race, our focus right now is on the May primary.''

The only Democrat who has formally declared is Secretary of State Elaine Marshall. Among Republicans, the only declared candidate to succed the conservative Republican Helms is former Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot.

And the move toward the left continues unabated.  In fact, people clammer to jump on board the bandwagon.

She may not be the BEST Republican but we need to keep the seat. I know, I know there are those that say she is a RINO and loves the UN but hey, a win is a win.

Dole will announce candidacy Tuesday

SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) -- Elizabeth Dole will announce Tuesday that she is entering the race for the Senate seat now held by Jesse Helms.

Dole is expected to make the announcement in her hometown of Salisbury at a 1 p.m. news conference, sources told the Associated Press.

"She is running. She's going to let everyone know then," said a Republican officeholder who had spoken to Dole earlier in the day.

The source also said Dole, a Republican, planned to embark on a 100-county tour of the state almost immediately.

Dole, 65, has not lived in North Carolina in decades and had long been registered to vote in Kansas, the home state of her husband, former Sen. Bob Dole.

But after Helms announced he would not seek re-election last month, she notified election officials that she was ending her voter registration there.

Dole has said she continues to consider Salisbury home, even though her career took her to Washington.

In Washington, she has served as secretaries of the U.S. Department of Transportation and U.S. Department of Labor. More recently, she served as head of the Red Cross.

Former Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot, who lost the gubernatorial election to Gov. Mike Easley last fall, is the only Republican to have officially entered the race. Rep. Richard Burr of Winston-Salem also has been mentioned as potential GOP contender.

Secretary of State Elaine Marshall is the lone Democrat to enter the race.
