NEW YORK –– Frank Sesno is stepping down as CNN's Washington bureau chief, becoming the latest executive to leave the news channel as it undergoes a top-to-bottom makeover.
Sesno, who had been with CNN since 1984, said Monday that his contract was coming up for renewal in mid-October and he wanted to pursue another career. He said he has not decided what to do next.
CNN did not announce a replacement for him. Sesno had been the Washington bureau chief for CNN since 1996. "CNN is going through some changes, and it's going to have to figure out how that's going to settle out," Sesno, 46, said in an interview.
Numerous top executives have left CNN recently, including Phil Kent, who announced his resignation as president two weeks ago, and Tom Johnson, who retired as chairman in June. Johnson was replaced by former Time magazine editor Walter Isaacson.
CNN is revamping its programming as it fends off a challenge from Fox News, the rapidly growing cable news channel owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. CNN recently relaunched its Headline News channel and is also remaking its financial news channel CNNfn, which has been clobbered by challenger CNBC.

A house-cleaning that replaces liberal hacks with other, more "disguised" liberal hacks is not going to be enough to get increased viewership. Perhaps a pure committment to Fair & Balanced coverage would be warranted. Do you still have that lame Jesse Jackson show? Are you still using your web site to spread Tom Daschle's talking points? If so, perhaps you'd best look at your "lower echelon" employees, too. Get real. An overhaul of your "look" isn't needed...an overhaul of your ATTITUDE is.
He used to have a high-profile on-creen CNN presence.....don't watch it.....don't know what happened....
