CHANDRA LEVY'S family is demanding that police search remote caves and a national forest for the missing intern after Congressman Gary Condit was linked to a secret, late-night trip to the area outside Washington, D.C.
During interviews with Condit's ex-lover, flight attendant Anne Marie Smith, the FBI uncovered a startling clue. On May 17, Condit called Smith from a pay phone in Luray, Va., 80 miles from the nation's capital, says a source.
The ominous call, which was verified by phone records, was placed at midnight -- approximately two weeks after Chandra first disappeared -- on a day Condit was supposed to be at work.
"During the call, the congressman told Anne Marie they were going to have to lay off their relationship for a while because he 'had some business to take care of,'" says a source.
Now the Levys are wondering if that "business" was disposing of Chandra's body!
"We don't know why the congressman would be at such a deserted pay phone in the middle of the night two weeks after Chandra's disappearance," says a Levy family friend.
"Dr. Robert Levy and his wife Susan believe Condit was involved in her death and think he may have hidden her body, either in the caverns or in the nearby mountains and forest."
Local resident Pete Hewell agrees that it would be easy to dispose of a body in Shenandoah National Park, a huge, 200,000-acre forest. "There are many scenic overlooks on Skyline Drive, a federal tourist highway that runs through the area," Hewell says.
"Drop a body off one of those ledges, and no one would be able to see it through all the underbrush. The bears and foxes would gnaw at it first -- then the crows and buzzards would pick it clean."
The nearby Luray Caverns would also make a good hiding place for a body, say sources. Many of the caves are more than 10 stories high and filled with towering stone columns and pools.
Chandra Levy was last seen on the evening of April 30.
The FBI now theorizesthat Condit may have caused her death in D.C. the afternoon or evening of May 1 and hidden the body near her DupontCircle apartment. Later hepanicked, retrieved the body and moved it to a remote location.
On May 6, Chandra's parents called Condit at his home in Ceres, Calif. Condit denied that he and Chandra were involved in an affair. He also said that he didn't know anything about her disappearance.
The Levys flew to Washington May 15, and Condit gave his first interview to the D.C. investigators the same day.
Soon after, police announced that they would begin a search of parks and buildings in the area near Chandra's apartment. Chandra's photo first appeared on newscasts in Washington May 16.
The Levys believe Condit may have gotten nervous about the cops finding the body in the city, and decided to move her remains to a more remote location, like Luray Caverns or Shenandoah National Park.
Investigators find the timing of his apparent trip to Virginia particularly suspicious because Condit, who has one of the best voting records in the House, missed his first vote of the year May 17.
He showed up for a routine procedural vote at 10:26 a.m., then took off from the House chambers and missed votes at 11:26 a.m., 12:32 p.m. and 2:09 p.m. He was not seen for the rest of the day.
That afternoon, Anne Marie Smith called Condit's special answering service and left a message that she was going to be in Washington and wanted to get together, sources say.
At around midnight, Condit called her back from a pay phone in Luray, a town of just 4,400 and very popular with bikers, says the source. According to the statement Anne Marie gave the FBI, the Casanova congressman told her: "I have to lay low for a while. I have some business to take care of. I might be in some trouble."
Smith told investigators: "When he called me initially saying that he was in trouble and he may have to disappear, he said: 'Please don't mention my name to anybody. Don't tell them about this phone call.'
"He said: 'You have to believe me. I want to sit down and explain this to you, let you know what's really going on.'"
The Levys want to know what's going on, too. That's why they're asking police to shift their investigation to the forest and caverns.
"We realize it's a big job to cover a huge area like that," says a family friend. "But we're convinced that Gary Condit was up to no good the night he called Anne Marie from that pay phone.
"Records show that he missed important votes in the halls of Congress on May 17, and he placed the call to Anne Marie at midnight. So where was he between the hours of 11 a.m. and midnight? Hiding Chandra's body in some God-forsaken place, we believe."
Anyway, it appears that a friend of the Levy family is monitoring this board. That is good to know. And I hope the Levy family continues in its pursuit of an investigation of the caves in the Luray area.
Fill in the blanks yourself.
It is telling that these were his only missed votes too.
All Condick 24/7 = no time for demorat lies. He, He, He.
Of course he was, but the main stream press and the DC police don't seem to be taking it to seriously. This and his throwing that watch box away are the two things that make believe he should be their prime suspect.
Or perhaps it's Star Magazine that's monitoring this board.
I dont think he transported it to Luray!
I think that whole day may have been spent with Abbe Lowell in deep stratedgy!
I think Condit killed her in a fit of anger in his condo, and bent her in half at the waist, tied her body into a tight package, put her in a lot of black garbage bags and put her in some garbage can!
Who would ever find her?
Keep it simple!
Hmmm...Maybe they dress casually.
Anyway I did not see dogbyte12's great analysis anywhere else (until the Star Magazine story) except here on the FR.
