A Wellford man was gunned down Saturday when witnesses said he returned from jail to apologize for his behavior.
Jonathan Hunter, 37, of 102 Padgett Court was shot six times at the Sugar Shack, a gathering place on Frey's Creek Road opposite the Palmetto Landfill.
Hunter was in fair condition in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, spokeswoman Michelle Wais said.
Hunter underwent surgery after he was driven to the hospital by a cousin who witnessed the shooting.
Spartanburg County sheriff's Lt. Ron Gahagan said Hunter had been arrested Friday in the vicinity of the Sugar Shack.
He was charged with assault and resisting arrest when 16-year-old Chris G. Sexton told deputies Hunter was drunk and hit him in the face after an extended verbal argument.
Sexton's story was supported by a witness, T.J. Dandy, a deputy's report stated.
When the deputy questioned Hunter, he became belligerent and approached the officer. The deputy attempted to handcuff Hunter, who pulled away and both fell into the side of the building.
A second deputy assisted in Hunter's arrest.
Hunter spent the night in jail and was released on a $2,025 bond late Saturday afternoon.
Gahagan said Hunter was at the Sugar Shack by 5:30 p.m. and began apologizing for his actions on Friday.
"That's when someone in the group produced a handgun and opened fire," he said.
Investigators remained on the scene late Saturday night. A search warrant was executed as the investigation continued, but an arrest had not been made.
Neighbors said the Sugar Shack, a single-wide mobile home attached to a building, is not a business where beer and liquor is sold.
"It's just a place to hang out. You have to bring your own," said a 19-year-old, who would not give his name, as he watched law enforcement officers at the scene.
