The decision sealed the fate of 2-month-old Wesley Lucas.

D.C. social workers were assigned to protect Wesley from his neglectful, cocaine-addicted mother. So they allowed the baby to stay with his mother's boyfriend. The 69-year-old man was dying from lung cancer, but the workers promised to provide a caretaker to help.

They decided not to send anyone over the long Presidents' Day weekend in 1998.

Collectively, is there a more incompetent bunch of government employees than social workers? They rush to grab children from parents on the flimsiest of excuses then throw them to unmonitored and sometimes abusive foster care. Someday I hope someone prints a box score - Children saved from homicide by social workers vs. children killed by social worker placement and other neglect. Ditto for child abuse and rape. If the score is negative for social workers, would we be any worse off than to fire the lot of them?

Horrible. What makes it all the worse is that for days no one bothered to check on the old man and child, despite the constant crying and obvious signs of something being wrong. What an imcompetent bunch of social workers. And I bet there will barely be any actions taken against them.

Some serious jail time or worse would probably be more appropriate.

You have given us an impossible task I'm afraid.

This is such a sad story, but all too common today.
