A month after the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-to-4 decision for George W. Bush in the presidential election, dissenting Justice David Souter met at the Court with a group of prep-school students from Choate. He told them how frustrated he was that he couldn't broker a deal to win over one more justice - Anthony Kennedy being the obvious candidate. "If he'd had 'one more day - one more day,' Souter now told the Choate students, he believed he would have prevailed," according to an excerpt of an upcoming book by Newsweek Senior Writer David Kaplan.
I have yet to come across a ballot count result (official or unofficial) that showed Al Gore in the lead.
All Souter is saying is that if he had one more day he could have persuaded one other justice to give the supreme court Decision to Gore.
But that would not have elected Gore. Every recount shows that if the courts had given Gore every thing he asked for, Bush would have still won the state of Florida and the presidency.
The recounts showed that only if the standards that Bush asked for were applied would Gore have had a chance. The only way Gore could have won was for the Supreme's to throw it back to the Florida Supreme court and the Florida Supreme court then rulled for Bush.
There was zero chance of that happening.
One of the more interesting facts is that history doesn't mean much of anthing as a determinate of what will happen in the future and is not very accurate about what took place in the past.
History is just what ever the victors say it is.
Think about what History would have called George Washington and Thomas Jefferson had Brittian won the Revolutionary war. Think what history would say about Benedict Arnold had Brittian won the revolutionary war. Can you imagine what would be in the school books every Amercian child studies? What would history say about Stalin had Russian won the cold war? The Russians would have written the history books that is for sure.
History is what ever the ultimate victors say it is. It has nothing to do wiht truth or what is accurate. It has only to do with who won and what they want remembered about what happened.
Bush won the election. The Allies won the Battle of the Bulge. Hitler and his others claiming otherwise has no effect on real events.
No matter what Gore or his supporters say, Gore lost. Bush Won.
Finally anyone who has been in politics more than two weeks know that people vote in their own self interest. If the economy had been booming in 1992, Bush Sr. would have been re-elected. If the economy is booming in 2004, Dubya will win in a landslide. If we are in bad times, any Democrat who can get the nomination will win easily.
The miracle of the last 100 years is that with 8 years of booming economy, and the Vice president running, Gore LOST against a Governor who was constantly put down by the media as being dumb.
Gore should have won. There is no way he should not have won. Monica elected Dubya, not the Supreme Court. Republicans should build a monument to Monica in front fo the RNC offices. She not the supreme court elected Dubya.
Being a big Shrubshill, I know this is hard to take, but you'll note that the Dems were able to re-write history concerning Reagan within just twenty years. They will be able to re-write history daily with a quasi-socialist like Junior Shrubya. Count on it.
Always a pleasure,
Callahan

Cut and paste please. Type it in...don't go through FR. Newsweek might be able to delete FR voting! - - Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and VOTE. Current results are 39% No (correct response), 59% Yes (incorrect whining left-wing response), 1701 votes tallied.
It's pretty clear who was being biased here--the liberal justices.
In fact, not only will MSNBC and CNN refer to this poll - all day tomorrow - but probably the rest of this month of September! Vote today and ping everyone you know.
