Many people have written their federal representatives about problems they have had with the IRS only to recieve extremely apathetic reactions. Typically the federal rep forwards the letter of complaint onto the IRS so that the IRS can investigate itself. Eventually the IRS sends back a very predictable response that is incomplete and very often filled with statements that are very obviously dishonest. Federal reps never question or challenge the IRS on these problems however no matter how self evident they may be. Instead they mail the response back to the taxpayers and consider the matter closed. If the taxpayer continues to protest, the same procedure is followed with each subsequent letter of complaint; it is sent to the IRS and the response (which is never questioned) is then sent back to the taxpayer. If the taxpayer asks the representative to request certain files that would prove his case against the IRS, the representative either ignores the request completely or refuses to obtain the files. If the taxpayer then sends in his own copies of the pertinent files the representative refuses to comment or take any type of position that is independant of what the IRS has already told him or her. I want to hear from others who have been in contact with their representatives so that I can collect stories about individual representatives throughout the country and publish them on a website. My hope is that we may embarrass our reps into dealing with the IRS more aggessively which might (hopefully) result in a less dishonest tax system.
