JONESBORO, Ark. -- Nestle USA chose Jonesboro for a new facility because of the city's quality of life, and city leaders said at a Thursday groundbreaking that the $165 million frozen food plant will make life in Jonesboro a lot better.
The plant will bring 1,000 jobs.
"This is the largest investment Nestle has ever made in a new production facility anywhere in the world," said Stephen Conliffe, president of Nestle USA's prepared foods division.
Nestle, the world's largest food maker, cited the available work force and civic life in Jonesboro among its reasons for putting the plant in northeast Arkansas. The city was also able to offer wastewater treatment that can accommodate the volume the company will need.
Production is to begin in the first half of 2003.
The plant, which will produce Stouffer's and Lean Cuisine frozen meals, made it to the top of a list of 753 communities that Nestle considered, said Jay Weaver, vice president of operations for the Nestle prepared foods division.
"Jonesboro won because they had the very best combination of an enthusiastic work force, competitive operation cost and a strong emphasis on quality of life," Weaver said.
More important than these factors, I'll bet this will be a non-union shop, too.
