Republicans Want Sen. Smith to Step Aside

The GOP is urging Sen. Bob Smith of New Hampshire not to seek re-election, and Rep. John Sununu will announce his intention to seek Smith's seat in late October, Fox News reported today.

Smith is considered the most vulnerable senator, and Republicans are worried, especially with the looming retirements of Sens. Phil Gramm of Texas, Jesse Helms of North Carolina and Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, and the possible departure of Tennessee's popular Fred Thompson.

Polls show that the New Hampshire Democrats' probable senatorial nominee, Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, would trounce Smith but could lose to Sununu.

Sununu's announcement had been expected last month, but he delayed it so Republican leaders could try to get Smith to bow out, Fox reported.

I thought Smith was a respectable and conservative Senator. He certainly has been a strong pro-life advocate. Why run him off for a RINO(IMO)? Is it because he tried to bolt out of a concern that the GOP was too liberal? If anyone agrees (or not) I'd like to see whether or not we should let the GOP know. Just asking....

Sununu is no moderate. He had a 96 voting record according to ACU in 2000 and 100 in 1999 -- same as Dick Armey who is no moderate!

Smith not only left to run for President but he burned a lot of bridges in doing so especially in NH. I think he should step aside, accept a political appointment, and let Sununu beat the Governor. We need to win this race to take back the Senate and SUNUNU is a CONSERVATIVE!!!!!

This is BS! The Republicans can't believe the Bobby "Party Jumper" Smith would do anything that put party interests before his own. The only difference between Traitor Smith and Traitor Jeffords is that Smith quickly learned that he was even more of a loser as an independent and jumped back to the party before most folks knew he was gone.

Voted YES on ending preferential treatment by race in college admissions. (May 1998)
Voted NO on starting implementation of Kyoto Protocol. (Jun 2000)
Voted YES on allowing vouchers in DC schools. (Aug 1998)
Voted YES on vouchers for private & parochial schools. (Nov 1997)
Voted YES on decreasing gun waiting period from 3 days to 1. (Jun 1999)
Voted YES on Tax Cut Package of $958B over 10 years. (May 16)
Voted YES on eliminating the Estate Tax. (Apr 4)
Voted YES on eliminating the "marriage penalty". (Jul 2000)
Voted YES on repealing the estate tax ("death tax"). (Jun 2000)

This is NOT an anti-Smith effort, but rather a pro John Sununu effort. The polls simply show Senator Smith as a weaker and more vulnerable candidate.

The goal of political parties (well, the ones that have a chance to prevail) is still to win. Kinda like the goal of your employer is to create a profit.

Thanks for the information. Smith did it to himself and we're out here to win so he should step aside and help Sununu keep the R Seat! They're both good men so let the WINNER run!

What's your feelings on the Texas Senator race now that Sen. Gramm has announced he won't run?

Smith is a good man who's time has come and gone. Let's face it, his brief foray into independent politics, and subsequent return, was just a little bit kooky.

Sununu is a good man with a future. In addition, he can win and Smith can not.

This is a no-brainer.

What in the hell do you mean Smith can't win?

He won in the past hasn't he?

He is the strongest pro-2nd Amendment fighter in the Senate!

Smith is also the strongest pro-life Senator in the Senate!

Smith has also long been the strongest fighter on the MIA/POW advocate in either the Senate or the House!

Some people on FR would rubberstamp any damn stupid thing the RNC corrupt leadership wants!

I can't believe you guys would want to get rid of the biggest defender of the Second Amendment in the Senate!

Can you put your country above your Lott-lead party leadership for once?

Even though he is a fine Conservative, Smith screwed himself last election cycle. He will now pay the price.

"The goal of political parties (well, the ones that have a chance to prevail) is still to win. "

Unfortunately. Winning is more important than principles.

But winning to do what? The father of Sununu and fellow-New Englander Rudman got the father of President Bush to appoint Souter. Yes winning is all that counts - echos of Clinton.

If you don't win, you can't get anything done, except to sit in the corner with the other losers. Some "conservatives" would rather lose on "principle" than try to create a governing coalition.

A 96 and a 100 rating from the ACU, and you still chuckle at the idea that he could be considered a conservative.

Some of you people are just plain goofy.
