Illegal Newark, NJ Arena Debt Stopped by Protesters

A group of protesters ultimately stopped the New Jersey State Assembly from approving a bill that would have added state debt for a new sports arena in an illegal manner. Activists from stopthedebt.com, United Taxpayers of New Jersey, and other citizens' advocacy groups packed the room where the Assembly hearing was held in Trenton.

The hearing was called for 2 pm. By 3 pm, the room was totally packed with activists, business interests, media, and legislators. At 3:00, NJ Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Bret Schundler appeared, ready to make a statement at the hearing. A few minutes later, the hearing was cancelled with no reason given.

I soon learned that NJ Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate Jim McGreevey had withdrawn his support for the bill; Democrat legislative support immediately. Since our goal was to prevent the passage of this bill, we had accomplished our goal.

I am vice chairman of stopthedebt.com, so I attended the hearing. Our organization currently has a lawsuit at the NJ Supreme Court that would prevent this illegal looting of citizens' wallets for the arena, for another $8.6 million for a school construction boondoggle, and for most other future debt.

The problem is that the NJ State Constitution requires there be a referendum for new significant state debt, i.e., the citizens must approve it. The legislature has prevented us from having our vote by using "spending authorities" as a subtrefuge.

I made sure several news organizations got a statement from me for stopthedebt.com, and blanketed the room with a flyer from the group.

Further background on this issue can be found at the stopthedebt.com website.

A very successful FReep!
