I would also like to make a suggestion that I made earlier. Free Republic should identify those Freepers who make a monthly contribution by putting an asterisk next to their screen names or some other way of setting them out from the rest. I think this recognition will encourage others to go on the monthly program. Thus, we with the asterisks next to our name, might be given a little leeway if we start whining and complaining about things.

In my opinion, this is the best suggestion for getting monthlies that I have ever read on any of the fund-raising threads.
FReepers and newbies would be curious as to why some names had an asterisk after them and others didn't and all Free Republic would have to do is put a small "*denotes monthly supporter" or something to that effect at the bottom of the page with a link to where one could sign up. I don't think too many FReepers would not want to join in this effort and most of your fund-raising problems would be solved. It's certainly worth a try!

As to identifying contributors, there is much controversy about this so we have decided to proceed with caution and will probably not make this kind of move until the lawsuits are resolved and FR morphs into whatever comes next.
Again, I don't mean to infer that Freepers on the monthly donation plan be given special privileges or special status. Just a little recognition next to their names that lets the forum know that they are contributing to Free Republic on a monthly basis. Doesn't have to be an asterisk. It could be their screen names showing up in red or something like that.
Do that, and a lot of people will want to get their screen names recognized as well.
Frankly, I can't say enough about the monthly contribution. It comes out through my ATM card every month and I don't even notice it because I cancelled delivery of the Boston Globe when I set it up initially for $10 a month and then cancelled HBO when I upped it to $20 a month a few months ago. Can't say I miss the Globe or HBO but I sure would miss Free Republic if that went away.
