AI Data Centers were the biggest losers of election night, going 1 for 41 on moratorium referendums

Man, if you think the Republicans had a rough night, and they 1000% did, just wait until you see the results on AI data centers!

So the results are all in. Data center moratoria (various flavors) went 43-1.

All hyperscalers must now converge on Harwood, North Dakota, the one outlier. Find out what's in the water or in the air. There is only one precinct and 400 voters, but they alone sided with you!

What a weird thing to even get worked up about.

We have more than enough. We have double what China has.

“What a weird thing to even get worked up about.”

No kidding. Lots of conjecture the anti-data center movement was conjured up by China.

Facebook is full of memes Youtube was full of special videos Text messages are stored in Personal videos are stored in data I think what the people really need it’s to be told from now on if you don’t want data centers then the data that we do have you will start having to pay to post a meme post a Youtube video the text and that kind of thing No more free freebies There’s not enough room to store all that free data now you’re gonna have to have some pay for the data Maybe that will open a few people’s minds How does it take someone’s data or Google to take your black and white photo and colorize it for you for free A lot of people including politicians it bought into propaganda about data centers

AZ is usually in forefront of technological innovation.
But data centers were for some reason labeled for stealing electricity and especially water (despite that they were promising water recycling) and so highly undesirable.
I became major issue, with Republicans labeled as Data Center supporters.

Yes, we all should ruin our quality of life to fight the slanty eyed boogie man.

My electric bill jumping 7% because of data centers is something to be worked up about.

Exactly. China has been investing massively into AI. Massive, state directed, investment into AI. Aggressive capital deployment, huge investment into energy infrastructure (the real story that most are unaware of), and even straight-up theft of intellectual property.

On the energy front, which AI needs, China has been busy adding capacity roughly equivalent to Europe’s TOTAL installed base in just 4-5 years. They have also deployed covert knowledge distillation techniques against Western APIs to train domestic models. They used to be two years behind, now they may be less than 3-6 months. And that is with export restrictions in place.

I also suspect that they may have played a role in stoking public backlash against data center expansion and technological adoption, and unfortunately a large part of the voting public bought into it. Rather than having conversations on the pros and cons of AI (and there are cons, but nothing that cannot be mitigated againsy), people do not want to even discuss.

China is laughing. Very sad.

Just think how much better off we would be if we didn’t create the wheel... Exactly! We would be so much better off, because the last thing humanity needs is advancement.

How much do you think your electric bill would have gone up without data centers?

How in the world did we ever survive without all these data centers? They’re going to be used for more than just memes. They’re going to be used for surveillance and eventually digital money. In other words, they’re going to be used to control us.

Data Centers is one of the big reasons Trump lost the youth vote that he got in 2024.

How do you know that we have enough?

Why is China a bench mark?

Far too often “industrial development” means the current customers and taxpayers get stuck with the bill so that the city councilmen or county commissioners can appear with a shovel at a ceremonial groundbreaking and get campaign contributions along with a no show job for a child or other relative. I’m getting tired of American capitalism being socialized costs and corporate profits. This is true with sports palaces and now data centers. I’m waiting for five years from now when half of them are abandoned warehouses piled up with then obsolete computer equipment.

I don’t get it. It’s not like data centers are new. The fear and loathing of them is beyond reason. Apparently millennials of all demographics fear and oppose AI. Luddites did well in this election.

Elon Musk and SpaceX went Cha Ching if they get datacenters in space working.
