Poland's president accuses Tusk of forced takeover of country's top court

Polish President Karol Nawrocki on Saturday accused Prime Minister Donald Tusk of staging a forced takeover of the country's top court after the head of the court, an ally of the previous far right government, was suspended.

Late on Friday, the Constitutional Tribunal said its ‌longest-serving judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska had suspended Bogdan Swieczkowski, the tribunal's president and an appointee of Tusk's hard-right predecessor, and was now in charge of the court.

The move escalated a battle between Nawrocki, an ally of the previous nationalist government, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-European government over control of the judiciary.

"Tonight, there was a breach of public order in the Republic of Poland and a forcible takeover of a constitutional body," Nawrocki said in a statement read by an aide outside the court early on Saturday, after the president had turned back mid-flight from a trip to Africa to address the situation.

He headed straight to the court where riot police were out in force as several hundred protesters demanded Swieczkowski's reinstatement.

Nawrocki called for urgent political consultations. Tusk, writing on X, said his government was seeking to restore the rule of law, which the European Union had accused his predecessors — the Law and Justice Party — of subverting.

"This process is difficult, at times even painful, and requires decisive action. There is no other way," he said.

while critics at home and abroad said the court no longer met the standards of an independent and impartial tribunal established by law.

Well, yers. If somebody says "A", a critic, by definition,l will say "NOT A". Reuters is just trying to give unnamed "critics" the moral position.

Best I can tell, this is the same as when our president vetoes a budget and allows a "government shutdown", or when the Congress doesn't officially go on a legal recess so that the elected president cannot make recess appointments.

The consequences of both of those U.S. actions are far more "paralyzing" than not accepting judicial appointments which he is allowed to do.

I agree, Obozo is a egotistically demonically inspired instigator, constantly stirring the Communist pot. He set up Tusk to go ahead with this coup. Let’s see where Tusk lands when this dust settles.

This will be most interesting because "a government divided" is at play, the playbook of the world's internationalists arrayed against "localists" as even the word nationalist is attacked by the internationalists ( globalists ).
