Pentagon officials have in recent weeks asked several NATO countries to tone down their rhetoric regarding the threat posed by Russia, arguing that some statements by European leaders and officials have undermined continental security, four people familiar with the matter said.
Among the nations that have received messages urging them to keep public statements in check are Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity. It was not clear if the messages, which were delivered in bilateral meetings, were conveyed to other European governments.
Among the comments that have drawn US officials' attention are suggestions by European leaders that Russia is cornered and resorting to increasingly desperate measures as its invasion of Ukraine slows to a crawl, one of the people said.
Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby, a key figure in an ongoing review of US troop levels in Europe, was one of the US officials delivering the message, the people said.

Trump never misses a chance to help out Pootin!
“the opposite of Ronald Reagan” (sadly)
Reagan dealt with The Soviet Union, not Russia.
You’re a Ukrainian. Your interpretation of the reasoning behind this is colored by your strong emotions and bias. And quite possibly by a paycheck.
I don’t know the true reasoning behind this either because I’m not privy to the whole situation and I’m not necessarily supportive of it at face value but yelping little TDS/Democrat remarks isn’t a good approach for this site.
They’re good with rhetoric, but not with building borders, warships, bombers, armies.
Your opinion may prove unpopular, but it is correct.
Shades of Obama chatting Romney for noting the Russian threat.
Shades of Obama chatting Romney for noting the Russian threat.
This Ukraine conflict should be none of our business. We shouldn’t be dispensing money, advice, or anything else.
If all parties involved honestly want Trump to act as a mediator, fine. Otherwise, it’s Europe’s problem. Let them handle it.
The communist Soviet Union is long gone. Communism is against the law in Russia.
The Ukraine has long been a problem child fostered by the globalist European Union. It was the drug running, human trafficking, money laundering capital of Europe. Egged on by the EU the Ukraine threatened not to renew Russia’s military port lease on the Black Sea and built a military base 36 miles from Russia’s border. Now they are in the FO stage of FAFO.
I’m sure the Chinese are working against Elbridge Colby (William Colby’s grandson) and would like to see him gone. He thinks China is our main concern. Supporting Ukraine is like owning a boat. All the blood and treasure poured into it for no good reason. Let the Euros do it without us. The day may come when we need to work with Russia against a common enemy. We need to make sure we aren’t looking in the wrong direction when China goes for Taiwan.
No, I’m not Ukrainian, just someone who loves Peace and hates murderous dictators
Look, if Trump insists on hitching his star to Pootin, then he is DOOMED to be infected by the same bad luck that plagues Pootin’s life (example - the Ukraine War)
Why is Donald Trump deliberately creating bad karma for himself??
You, anti America First Foreigner do not belong here.
You are an enemy of the American people.

The USSR was merely one iteration of Russia.
You are an enemy of the American People.
No, you lying Pootin stooges are the real enemy of America
I WANT Pres. Trump to succeed, but he can’t if he keeps kissing Pootin’s ass
